Buying my first bike in 15+ years. Last one I had was when I was 9. Have zero experience with bikes and need some advice.

A friend is selling his Rockrider pictured below. I’m wondering if it’s a good first bike for me? My typical commute is gonna be on city streets, and I plan to ride around an hour everyday. I’ll be starting out slow but hope to build up enough stamina and pace so that I can switch to commuting on a bike instead of a motorcycle or a car.

I’m wondering if this is a ‘good’ brand of bike? The only brands I was familiar with before this were the likes of Canondale or Giant, but most of those are way out of my budget; hadn’t even heard of Rockrider and can’t find much info on this particular model online.

This is a pre-owned bike but all the new bikes available where I live are either no-name Chinese knock-offs or cost 3x what I make per month. The seller is a trustworthy guy I know and says this bike was ‘Made in Austria’ and is asking around $240 USD for it. For reference, the new bikes available to me cost around $160 USD.

A bit about me: I’m 6ft. (183 cm), 105kg (230 lbs), and looking to get more active/lose weight. Cycling was recommended to me as a more low-impact alternative to running, which because of my bulk triggers a lot of joint pain and makes my plantar fasciitis act up.

All and any advice is much appreciated. Ride safe!

Decathlon are cheap bikes, cheap to buy, cheap produced, cheaply put together. They are good if u don’t really care about your bike and just need one occasionally or if you just have a very thight budget.

And why do you want a Mountainbike if, what it seems like, all you want to do is commuting on city roads? I feel like other forms of bike could suit you better
