Last week I completely changed the chain and cassettes on the bike. The day after the replacement, I was caught in the rain and had to drive under it for about three hours. The next morning I discovered the cassettes were covered in rust. I thought that such damage required at least a month of prolonged exposure to moisture. I would like to hear a professional opinion and clarify whether this is a normal phenomenon or the cassettes of low quality?
(Sorry about the dirt bike. It’s muddy outside and I’m planning on riding my bike today, so I don’t see the point of washing it.)

  1. I notice when I had a lower quality freewheel, it would get extremely rusty after the rain too. Now I have a more higher quality one and I was in the snow the other day. And I notice just a touch of rust, compared to how my other freewheel was.

  2. This sub really should set up some basic bike info that people must read before they post. It feels like there’s a post like this about the same kind of drivetrain rust every time I open Reddit.
