So in removing a decal on my frame the paint came with it from what I think is due to both the type of paint used and the strength/chemical reaction of the adhesive and the paint itself.
I admit Im stupid as there was no real reason to go near the decal but the head tube decal was sticking out of the sides of it and when peeled back, the paint and undercoat came with it!!!
Now I’ve primed the area with alcoholic wipes and added a primer and given the colour is trans teal have gotten about as close as I can at least with a mixture of similar colour paint!!
After leaving it overnight, when using 800 grit sandpaper I can see the colours getting lighter!? It’s only on the head tube and not the end of the world but I’m so annoyed at myself for going near the decal in the first place!?

Is this a question or an update… I can’t tell.
Decals are unlikely to have been placed beneath the clearcoat. In this example I’d have to guess that there were some minor impurities beneath the factory paint stages preventing the paint from bonding.
It may have been temporarily handled without gloves, leaving some grease on the raw metal. Maybe the decals were added when the paint was not fully cured. Who knows. Just peeling a decal should not have pulled the paint off, but for the future; always soften decal adhesive with solvents rather that tugging them off.
If this finsh was trans teal on raw, you wont get a near match by spraying grey primer then spraying trans teal paint on to that. One area will always be trans paint to primer and the rest will be a trans one-shot plasticoat type substance on to bare metal.
Rather than attempting a match, you might be better off picking a contrasting or complementary color, masking off your headtube and spraying it a different color instead.
Sounds like you have a game plan.
That said, it only costs about $30 to get a bmx frame stripped and re-powdercoated in a basic color of your choice (black, white, red, etc).
I actually got one of my frames stripped and re-powdercoated for $10 because the city was repainting all the bus stops a weird shade of purple and the shop that was doing the painting offered to just include my frame with the bus stop parts. I only paid the $10 for stripping and prep work. And now I get to have a bike that matches the local bus stops.
Although it can cost upwards of a $100 to get a fancier color.
S&M paint is shit unfortunately, I had a BTM and the paint would flake off if you looked at it funny!
