Dear people of reddit,

I need your help.

Can I combine these two things on my Cube Aim Race bike that currently has 3×8 drivetrain?

I wanna make a 1×8 drivetrain for commuting on flat terrain. My rear derailleur atm is **Shimano ACERA RD-M3020 7/8-speed Rear Derailleur SGS-Type** paired with **Shimano ACERA CS-HG400 8-speed Cassette 11-40** \+ **Shimano CN-HG71C 6/7/8-speed Chain.**

Will this build be ok, will I have issues with changing gears, slipping chains or something like that?

I gave my old 3×8 crankset to my friend so atm I have nothing, looking for a budget and simple solutions.

Thanx in advance!

  1. It will work but you won’t have the top 2 climbing gears so you may want to put a 28 in front. The derailleur won’t have a clutch so you’ll need a chain guide or you’ll drop a lot of chains

  2. No, those two things will not work together. The cranks are for use on a square taper bottom bracket. The bottom bracket you showed us is an external bearing type.

  3. If all you’re doing is commuting on flat terrain, your 3×8 is just fine. What is your reasons for wanting to go 1×8?
