I am finishing up a 1×9 conversion from a 3x. I just finished installing the derailleur and chain, and there is a very loud rumbling noise as I shift into the larger cogs on the cassette. Sounds like noise is coming from the pulley’s on the derailleur as well as rumbling from the chainring. Any advice? Perhaps my chainline is just off? I tried to get a bottom bracket with a shorter spindle so the chainring would line up with the middle of the cassette, but is that a wrong strategy? Thanks for any help!

Looks like your chain is rubbing on the tire when using the biggest cassette cogs.
This is happening to me but I have a 3x. I just have to adjust the front derailer. I’m planning on doing a 1X upgrade. I’ll follow this post for solutions in case I have this issue. I wonder if there’s some kind of spacer you can use to pull that chain ring out about a quarter inch. Are you using a thinner chain? Try adjusting the limit screw on the rear derailer.
This is pretty common with 1x, unfortunately. The sound is coming from the angled feed of the chain onto the chainring. 1x chainline is always a bit tortured at the extremes of the cassette. If you have clearance on the tire, you could think about moving the chainring in a few mm to give yourself better chainline on your low gears, but it’s not really necessary; eventually, the chain will wear in the chainring a bit and the noise will abate after a while on its own.
Calculate the chainline, don’t leave it to guesswork.
Can you take a picture of your derailleur routing? It looks and sounds like it’s routed around that tab that sticks out so it’s clicking there

Dude added spacers to pull the crankset out a bit.
Not sure if the tires are too wide for the frame.
I saw another dude use a power sander to grind down the tread on the side of the tire.
