Quick trip report on this loop idea I came up with after visiting 4 months ago and not getting enough of its culture and friendliness.

I am currently based in China and have a full time job which means I also get the public holidays so I took time do this trip during Chinese New Year which Vietnam also happens to observe: Tet (sorry for punctuation).

I didn’t know what to expect in terms of terrain and weather + I’m not very experienced with this being my longest tour so far so I didn’t plan for anything too challenging in terms of distance: total 393km across 5 days, with one rest day after day 4.

In the end, weather was extremely good and I have zero complaints about the route, eventhough there were challenging bits with 30% gradients and an off-grid segment I kind of traced by hand on Komoot looking at the satellite image (there seemed to be some sort of path) + a few dog chases that I luckily outran.

I did quite a bit of planning and prebooked guesthouses in different villages and cities so it was a bit of credit card touring but wasn’t sure about the camping situation in that area + was struggling to fit all my gear in the flying bike bag + my carry on.

Did the tour on my Shulz Boys Don’t Cry (Russian drop bar geo, flatbar converted frame) with Deroe M6100 12sp 32tx51t, Wheels: SunRingle duroc 30 rims + deore xt hubs, Schwalbe Smart Sam (with inner tubes), Ortlieb quick rack + North St. x OMM panniers, frame bag from Blackburn.

My favorite hack / would recommend: brought overnight oats mix which I prepared every night in a plastic PB jar and have the next day for breakfast. Best fuel for cycling.
