With great roads, stunning scenery and some of the best off-road tracks going, northern Spain offers both car and bike enthusiasts lots of options. In this video I join a group of three friends on a 4-day, 800mile mainly off-road tour on my 1983 classic Honda XL600LM Daker type bike and get to compare it to the latest KTM EXC350 when the going gets tough.
In part two, I give you a guide to the best bikes to take on tour, finding the best routes and what kit you need to wear.
Special thanks to Paul, Jon and Ifa for doing all the planning and guiding, plus helping out with video and photos to support this video, after my camera decided to pack up on this trip!

  1. I was noticing that low angle shot with you down at number plate level in the garage. As a shooter and editor I really like it. Who is the good brain behind the camera Harry? Because – THAT is Nice Work.

  2. You know Harry is the real deal when he is as enthusiastic about an old Honda thumper as he is about his Lamborghini Countach Quatro whotsit! What a true gent, thank you for another great video.

  3. The Picos are quite well known in the roadbike community. I've been three times and love it there. Never done it on a dirt bike but this looks great. An excuse to buy a new toy…

  4. Some very good tips, Harry.
I used to do a lot of off-roading when I lived in Spain and would recommend slim soft panniers, as opppsed to carrying the luggage too high. Also, gel inserts and a re-upholstering job on the KTMs would have transformed the comfort. My friend did this to his Husqvarna 701 enduro and he felt reborn after riding it. Looks great too, and all for £25 (here in Colombia, that is!)

  5. Have to agree about the Picos Harry, having been to the Colombres rally last October, they’re motorcycling Nirvana 😊 Love all your videos but think we’re due another bike related one soon 👍 Keep them coming

  6. me: more interested in cars than motorcycles…. me: watches Harry's motorcycle adventure…. me: finishes video, and begins browsing cycle trader for used vintage dakar bikes.

  7. Great videos Harry. Love the cars and bikes and thought the EV real world reviews were interesting. It would be interesting to see you try an electric bike by Zero or similar.

  8. Been riding off road since the 1980's. For the average person, the smaller and newer a bike is, the better it is off road. The KTM 450 was awesome for both. A 250 is ideal (easier) for most people.

  9. I also have a lovely fully working 1985 Honda XL600LMF, and it's great to see one in your collection and in action 👍 last time i looked there was only 18 registered on the road in 2020 ( UK )

  10. I know the areas you guys went through including Vizcaya, access to Burgos, the montaña palentina, Leon's mining area, Lugo´s east side with Leon, and back through Asturias to the Picos de Europa to Santander (born there, but I've lived in all those areas), very well, and I just want emphasize everyone around how demanding and tough that terrain can be for off-road motorbiking. Thanks God that it seems you got some decent weather. Congrats, you guys are tough! Very nice vid, again, congratulations!

  11. Coming here in 2021 because out of nowhere I remembered how underrated and wonderful northern Spain is and trying to plan a trip from Vigo to Andorra thru coast and mountains.

  12. If you fancy a road ride round the Picos Harry, have a look at the Colombres Rally-5 days of riding round the Picos which is basically paradise on old bikes. Lots of brits go down there each year, fabulous area for riding motorcycles both on and off road-loads of wonderful walking round there as well.

  13. Love the bike videos as this is my "thing". The Suzuki DRZ is indeed a great choice for this type of riding, and wearing good protective gear all the time is very wise…

  14. Nice to see someone giving the old DRZ credit. Not many people do nowadays. Hence why they're not in the UK anymore (luck Aussies). It's race ready KTM or a GS1200 for most people now. The two extremes of the scale. I love a DRZ. Forgotten gem.

  15. Late this summer I went to Picos da Europa and caught the worst weather to take a bike there, couldn't see the many lakes there. So my advice to someone who wants to go there is to choose the months on the early summer: May, June, July. The view is amazing, the roads are perfect and there are some proper gems hidden away like Cains.

  16. Never book a place where I stay for night. The rest: 100% agree. Also try Mitas C02 instead of TKC 80. I had both on XRV750, DRZ400, WR450F. Mitas C02 is great even on road.
