I had a previous “pleasant” experience to take off my shoes and let the airport staff to spray away the dirt off the sole when going through the immigration in NZ.

So I assume they would do the same for the tyres if found dirty.

To avoid this happening, should I deep clean the whole bike, especially the tyres? Some stains are hard to come off even though I’ve given them a good scrub.

Are my tyres okay to pass through the immigration with some stains (like the first pic)?

Thanks in advance!

We took mtbs to NZ for a bike tour. The tires shouldn’t have any embedded dirt in the treads. Like zero. And just wipe down the frame so it is clean. They are looking for dirt that might accomodate insects or eggs.

  2. Stains won’t matter but make sure you have no mud / dirt caked on or stuck in any cracks anywhere. As mentioned the control is mostly for seeds so all dirt/mud should be cleaned off. I’ve flow into NZ with a bike and with camping gear and had no problems but I had things clean.

  3. If you just hose it down before you pack it, it’s fine. I was told by the biosecurity officer (in Oz) as long as there are no loose soil/mud (think mtb) it’s fine. It should be like your shoes, reasonably clean not super dirty. They’re more or less the same (Oz and NZ) strictness when it comes to this.
