I’ve never seen a yach like this in my dreams sailing the seas in boat so Grand it seems but we’re just humble Sailors hey everybody welcome back to boat fool sailing thanks for tuning in last week and thanks for watching this week I’m in the HQ today with Canadian
Ken we’ve got a fun episode but before we get started a quick note uh on some time off that I’m taking my wife and kids and I are taking a family vacation it’s feary break uh so we’re going to be out of town through the weekend of the
17th we’ll be back in action on the 24th what are you doing for February break I’ll probably be watching your post on on Facebook that’s right uh you don’t have to worry about February break you don’t have any kids in high school or middle school or any school so exactly
Ah lucky you the freedom to watch YouTube all day long yeah so anyway we’re going to be out of commission for a week our first week off in a year uh so tune back in on the 24th in the meantime today we are going over the top
Trailer sailers for sale in New England for less than $10,000 so it’s going to be a good episode what is a trailer sailor how would you define it kind of you to ask Ken so technically a trailer sailor is a boat that’s easily uh towed behind a car
It’s got a shallow draft easy for launching at your public launch uh typically uh they all have auxiliary power like an outboard and they’re generally easy to set up and sale lower price point than a typical boat especially in the used market and uh you can overnight on these boats you can uh
Sell farther a field and uh they’re sort of they’re larger than the dingy uh but smaller than your standard uh ke boat and the one thing you don’t have is a moing or a slip you don’t need one that is perhaps the best key point about a
Trailer sailor is that uh in New England and uh Florida and California and in the Pacific Northwest it’s typically hard to find a moing or a slip this eliminates that barrier to entry and you can tow the boat behind your car and put it in your backyard when you’re done using it
Now that’s an excellent point about about the trailer s because in today’s episode uh we sort of blur the lines a little bit between a trailer sailor and maybe a day sailor but all of these boats have one thing in common is that is they have an outboard or some sort of
Auxiliary power so uh and they’re all trailerable and they all come with a trailer so that’s why in there in today’s episode so some are easier to launch than others some will be a little bit more difficult but uh the point is you don’t need a slip or Mooring to
Start your sailing season this summer so I think there’s a really cool boat yeah we have some good picks we’re looking at all New England who are down as far south as Rhode Island and um to the to the West in Vermont and a few picks up
Here as well in Maine yeah and I definitely have the best picks yeah you think you might I think I might I shall see shall see this is going to be fun so uh let’s go before we dive in let’s look at the boat fo’s top sailboat scorecard today
We’re doing six boats uh with four honorable mentions at the end so we’ll be grading these top six first uh so seamanship by seamanship I mean maintenance of the vessel how well it has been maintained by its current owner affordability does it make sense uh price-wise and how expensive is it going
To be to upkeep this particular boat Comfort is it going to be a comfortable boat to hang out on uh usability how easy is it to get on and off the mo or into the water in the case uh of these trailer Sailors and lastly is she pretty
Of course that is subjective but uh it plays a part in all of this so you want to be able to row or motor away from your boat or look at it in your backyard and say my gosh that is a pretty boat then we come up with a total uh total
Points for a perfect boat obviously would be uh 25 because uh one point is the lowest five of this is the highest and you can score at Half Point increments so uh five categories uh Time 5 is 25 and we have yet to find a perfect boat so let’s
Go all right here we go everybody so our first boat of the day is a 1988 McGregor 26 the 26d they call it the Mac 26 uh these were abundantly made thousands of these were made over 11,000 of these McGregors were made and this one seems to be in pretty good
Conditions thousands of dollars have been invested in a new motor cushions tiller paint and trailer maintenance um this price is $6,500 located in Milbridge main not exactly close uh that’s uh down east a little bit from here probably about 2 hours uh further down east from Camden but uh all in all
Not in bad shape you’ve got a brand new engine so you’ve got reliable uh Transportation with this thing out on the water and uh these McGregors have water ballast in them in them along with a dagger board so it’s kind of an interesting configuration but a very successful model uh for McGregor whether
You love these or hate these uh they’re very controversial this has had a little work done to your uh engine mount engine bracket here but uh overall this boat looks to be in Nice condition as does the trailer uh you’ve got a composting portable head on here it does have a
Little Galley and enough room to sleep six you’ve got um the this transom birth here right look at that yeah there’s so much room below it’s surprising this half birth yeah it’s crazy and this pops up a little bit here so you can have some extra head room when you’re on
Moing and you know what if you’re bored you can put a little bit bigger engine on this thing and take your kids uh tubing or something so you it’s sort of a yeah it’s a hybrid sort of powerboat uh sailboat and um very uh fun to sale apparently they perform well in light
Air but uh if you’re interested in this type of boat there’s a huge uh world out there on the internet that supports uh the McGregor uh fan base yeah they look so solid very sturdy yep um low maintenance it looks like low maintenance yep yep you know that motor
Amount is not the prettiest thing in the world but I i’ prefer that than having it down in a well I think I agree with you yeah for easy access to get it off and what ex um yeah but um you got new marine grade vinyl cushions uh for the
Cockpit you got a portable toilet that’s new uh and um the hull has uh fresh bottom paint includes uh upgraded main sale by Shore sales and a UK Genoa uh I would say the main sale is getting a little tired but um nonetheless uh it comes with everything you need to get
Going it’s a Yamaha six horsepower fourstroke long shaft uh just purchased a month ago from local Yamaha dealer they’re great little Motors I have to say yeah absolutely no mus no fuss uh so uh you know these things uh were PR they are prolific they’re everywhere and
They’re a lot of fun and easy to sail and if you have a small family this would be great for uh taking them out entertaining them doing good overnight here and there um but looking at the sailboat data on these this is the 26d the best that I can tell uh here’s your
Dagger board then you have some water ballast down here in the in the build area uh and um you know she’s got a beam of nearly 8 feet so not bad for a length of 26 and quick boat and light air 18.83% you know a reasonably stiff boat
I don’t know how much these numbers really matter on these smaller boats but uh suffice to say that uh you could have a lot of fun on this boat and uh take it just about anywhere along the main Coast for an overnight or whatnot so well with
11 whatever thousand built you know they there are a popular model and they were yeah exactly they weren’t that successful for no reason so that’s uh my first entry in today’s uh top six and we’re going to do uh you know four honorable mentions today due to time
Constraints and we are using our scorecard so uh want to want to score it up on this one let’s score this one up all right let’s do it all right Kenneth what’s your first entry my first entry is a 1976 SE Sprite uh day Sailer a Weekender it’s a pretty
Pretty boat it’s a rugged little boat and uh not very beamy uh this is got the tan bark sales which you saw I just love the lines on this thing it’s so pretty nice year yeah um this is so this this one here is for $495 it’s located in
Portland Maine we did notice there is another one a little more expensive down in Bristol Rhode Island oops right it seems to need a little bit more work for the price but it also looks like has some new wiring and other things so we got two here they’re beautiful Carl
Alberg design boats C Rider built you said and down Island down Island this is sort of interesting from the last one this does have a little uh well that the engine sits in which is you know fine there’s small engine it’s got a nice little five horsepower on there with
Only 30s on it so yeah it’s got a lot of the other things that you’d find a larger boat with the GPS the depth finder and the compass and things like that yep you know it looks like it could be a little bright work could be cleaned
Up obviously it’s grayed out a little bit but a comfortable boat you can obviously sleep a few on this one and take it take it out for a good ride yeah what do you think of these tambar sales do you find them pretty or or like traditional or unattractive or you don’t
See them all that often I usually see I can imagine more on a schooner than a smaller boat but you it’ll definitely you’ll stand out for sure yeah no I think they’re kind of cool and like I agree with you I mean look at the shear
On this thing and it’s got a nice full Keel uh Rudder hung uh keill hung Rudder excuse me uh nice like they say here nice graceful lines um this one has been kicking around for a while and we’ve seen it before but I still think it’s
It’s the best deal that money can buy right now for an entry level and with an outboard with only 30 hours on it so basically new there yeah yeah I you know and again all these are just asking prices we always say um you know like the difference was interesting one was
495 and one 65 yeah you know one’s in Maine and one’s down in Rhode Island so it could be a different Market exactly but both they’re just pretty little boats i’ love like you said the sheer lines on them and I I think they’re they’re they’re the rugged little boats
And very comfortable and this one’s got a little solar on it too and um yeah this one down in uh Rhode Island so if you’re closer to the Rhode Island area and you want one of these this one would be a great one to go get and this one’s got
Uh some sales that are in good condition he’s done a lot of wiring and whatnot and the fourstroke Yamaha on this one’s four horsepower uh new as of or not Service as of 20 2022 and trailers included and um both really pretty boats nice nice call Ken
Let’s look at the Sabo dat on this Qui on that uh fractional rig yep fractional rig and the full kill as we mentioned 7 foot beam uh first built 1958 Carl alberg and it’s going to move right along salary displacement of 177 it’s going to be great in light air it’s
Going to be fun to sail around nice stiff boat and I mean again we’re not going to dig into these sailboat data numbers on these boats but uh what an attractive sort of classic looking boat in in my opinion yeah I do and I I am attracted to these kind of boats whether
There you’ll see some of the other ones we’ve picked that have these sort of old old classic lines lines yeah and these price points are ridiculous I mean what and the fact they include trailers at that price point right so you can have this in your backyard to work on it it’s
Just amazing all right well that’s my first pick they’re both good I I prefer I think the one that’s up here in in Port yeah it’s a you know year younger but not much uh it’s hard to tell obviously from all the photos but I
Think there’ be a fun little boat I I like it a lot 100% agree nice big cockpit too to hang out nice combing yep nice combing and lean against nice picks Ken all right all right let’s uh let’s mark that one just just one of them just
One of them we’re just going to vote on the Portland the Portland okay fair enough all right so my second pick of the day is again we’re looking at classic lines and she in my opinion is a real standard of beauty and just I love the shear on
It it’s a 1978 19t Cape Dory typhoon Weekender uh Hull number 331 um has a 3 and 12 horsepower uh Nissan outboard it comes with sales fenders dock lines leg jackets cockpit cushions main sail tiller cover Fire EX signature horn removable outboard motor mount and a northlander uh trailer so uh all
For the low low price of $7,200 and she might be one of the more expensive boats on our list today but and she’s located in Hope Maine uh so not a lot of photos not a lot of photos so we can’t spend a lot of time on her but these Cape Tory
Typhoons are uh really Splendid Splendid boats and you can overnight on these and her name’s imp I love that name um and I wish there were more pictures and I’m going to try to find some to Overlay of other but a really really pretty boat
And uh a ton of these things were made and they’re very seaworthy steady boats uh and you can basically take these anywhere um it’ be great for an overnight and a small family or whatever for some fun but uh usually has a like a little uh porta potty up in the v birth
Area here sometimes a built-in head uh you can sleep too in here comfortably um 1,982 of these were built uh from 1967 to 1986 and oddly enough Carl Alber design they do have that s to the cbde very similar that simar Lin exactly and again in in light air she’s going to do
Fine it’s 16.16 nice stiff boat at 45 and you know the Comfort ratio is sort of irrelevant at this size but um but anyway just really pretty L it’s not to similar to the C Sprite it yeah yeah not the more I look at it exactly right and
Tiller obviously moling all these are yep and uh like I said you can sleep at least two down there I would think kill hung Rudder yep you could at least get two in there you sleep in the cockpit it’s big enough um but again I just there’s something it’s always looking
Like it’s on the move right it’s it looks like this boat just wants to go looks fun it looks fun and uh and I think it’s just a really adorable boat and so uh she’s my uh she’s my number two pick yeah it’s it’s just beautiful everybody’s Gorge I’m glad you think so
Um yeah and there are a ton of them around here and in fact I think our friends over at bondell um I think Robin out is one of these oh yeah it’s like her favorite boat on the world so uh this one’s for you Robin um all right so
Uh let’s uh let’s vote it up yeah that’s just a beauty yeah awesome all right Kenneth well what is your second pick of the day well it’s going to be hard to beat that one but I’m going to give it a try this is the dark Harper Manchester 17 and is built in
1929 wow it is in St ALB Vermont so this has been sailing on Lake champ plain so it’s obviously seaworthy there’s some good good good sailing out there I imagine ironically seaworthy on a lake right it can be vicious out there these these dark harbors and why I think I’m
Fascinated by them is because here an island just out there islesboro Dark Harbor they’ve made these and there’s since since this time I believe and or 100 years ago 100 years ago and they have a fleet there of about 20 that they race the Dark Harbor 20 the Dark Harbor
20s so which replac the 17 this replace the S yeah replace 17 anyway I think this boat has a a lot of potential it just again look at the lines it just looks looks fast it kind of reminds me a little bit of uh I don’t know if you
Know these kind but the fin boats that they used to race out here the high boats oh yeah um they’re very similar um Blue Moon I love the name great name again not a lot of photos on this but uh it it looks like it’s well-maintained
It’s got you know some bright work but again all looks beautiful shape beautiful shape I just there it must be on link Champlain it’s just a beautiful boat wooden mast look how Sleek that is I’m not sure about the engine on this but there is looks like there’s a little
Well there um obviously comes with the trailer as well so it’s about 26t this one overall length overall yeah it might even have an engine um but it comes with the trailers last sail in 2022 beautiful bolt with an old soul and I I think that’s exactly right and we have some
Images of the other dark Harbors that are pretty this Fleet yeah I’ll show that in a second and it just it’s called the Manchester 17 but she’s actually uh almost 26 ft long yeah and um yeah when we first looked this up on the sale data
We’re like now wait what is this cuz here it’s here is the Gaff rig so we believe this was probably modified to a Sloop rig at some point we believe the subject boat was yeah to a Sloop rig and 200 of these were made between 1908 and
1935 so that fits the time range when this was built 1929 right I see now the designer of this earlier on it wasn’t until what Oda Stevens came to albor that sort of did the 20 yeah Sparkman Stevens ol Stevens you’re right was uh brought on to design the uh dark haror
20 which has been racing now for basically 100 years ofo it’s unbelievable and you can tell their their quick boats yeah uh S A displacement nearly 22 at 2.78 and nice stiff boat at 40 uh this boat’s going to be fast uh it’s going to be a slick boat
To sail um originally as a gaff uh Gaff rig Sloop but I almost like it nicer as a Sloop rig for some reason I I agree with you I think it’s really I think it’s really pretty let’s pull that picture up again um I think it it’s a
Little bit prettier this way agree agree and obviously this wasn’t taken recently so we don’t have any current pictures of her under sale but for those of you interested in the Dark Harbor 20 and the Dark Harbor 17 story we’ll put this link in the description below but it’s pretty
Neat uh it talks about this the Dark Harbor 17 and how Olen Stevens the Sparkman and Stevens um came up to design the Dark Harbor 20 which has been extraordinarily successful and out of all of them made only one one out of service or something exactly and now
These the Boatyard is what the Pendleton boat and I believe Artis also will make them too in Rockport oh artison will okay um and apparently now they do make them uh in fiberglass they’ve uh they’ve figured out how to make it in fiberglass to to sell competitively with the wood ones uh
And going as far as using the lead Keel off of one uh and off one of the old wooden ones to put it on the new fiberglass just to give it the same uh uh feel out on the water and they’ve done all sorts of studies to make sure
That these can raise competitively competively yeah so there’s no uh so just cool boats SP up there I mean just it’s so pretty and they just look fast I mean they’re they are pretty boats so the one that we’re looking at is obviously a little more work but listen
For the price and and and you can have it in your backyard and work on it it says it’s in excellent condition and we all know what that means it could mean it’s a it’s a pile of junk but it doesn’t look like it it looks really
Nice I mean I think there’s always going to be maintenance on these type of boats versus some of the other ones we’re looking at no I I don’t see a lot I mean just the original one looked like the bottom could use little painting
And uh it’s I don’t know I just love the look of this guy if you want classic uh this is the way to go what’s that I said this guy I met oh this guy you met her yeah what are you saying man H she is a
Beauty no offense ma’am uh this is this is really a stunner and uh good find she was she was found on uh you found her on uh Craigslist CRA did I missed this one uh and up in uh up in St albins Vermont yeah we’re getting a nice territorial New
England we got to get Vermont in there shout out to Vermont um all right well let’s uh so that’s my uh that’s your second that’s my second all right let’s uh score it up score it up all right here we go my last pick of
The day of the top six is a uh 1972 harrishof America 18 catboat list price of $8,500 located down and the southern uh border of Maine near Portsmouth New Hampshire um and it’s a hair shop designed uh America H ha8 they call it and this just struck me as a
Really really pretty boat it reminds me of the Marshall Cat Boats um and uh it’s it comes with a trailer it comes with an outboard and it comes with a new mass that they got um let me read this quickly uh they got a new mask several
Years ago from Marshall Marine so from Marshall catboat uh Marine they got a new Tabernacle mask cost 6,000 at a time allows for keeping the soft dring and sail in place while the mass is hinged for travel so that’s nice easy to single hand and one of the best trailer sailor
Sailboats you can have uh sales are in great shape comes with a trailer comes with haard lines and sheets and a five horsepower Honda four stroke outboard uh from 2006 plus all your cushions and whatnot uh so uh really really pretty boat and they not a lot of pictures
Unfortunately um but we’ll find some more but um just uh I love the of the catbat and ever since I did that Marshall 22 with Captain um Parker uh it’s uh it’s really sort of struck a cord in my heart and they’re they’re just so classic and it just makes me
Think of Cape Cod and shallow water sing because this has a center Board of course you can get into really shallow places uh here’s your Center board mechanism here nice little uh V birth and uh just a really pretty boat so looking at the um in there I don’t know
I think it might have like a little Porta poot of some sort but um you might have to do the old bucket routine uh you can see it does have an engine well uh in the transom there um and a beam of 8 ft so nice and wide for for only uh 19
Feet long what is it 18 ft long excuse me only 18t long it’s got a 8ot beam which is nice and uh nice shallow draft and um of only if less than 2 feet minimum draft of that board up you get anywhere you get right in CL these
Things exactly exactly uh designed by harrishof of course so that’s amazing uh and since it’s has a sary displacement of [Applause] 22.64% you’d be the only one in there I bet like you said easy to single to solo sale just you said some people have modified these and moved the mask Captain Parker
He on the Marshall 22 he moved the mask back put a b and put a jib on there and and made it into a gaff Sloop and uh which you probably could do with this but it’s a lot of work but but why it’s
Got a huge mean uh so off the wind she’s going to go like a bat out of hell if we’re allowed to say that but um anyway it looks very well maintained it does look very well maintained I like the fact that the mass the way it steps like
Other boats it’s in its place already yeah it’s on this Tabernacle you just have to hoist it up this is the Tabernacle right here uh so you can just easily hoist that up um and they’ve the current owners have owned this uh for about a decade so that’s a pretty long
Time and they don’t want to uh get rid of it but they have to so and just this was just posted a couple months ago so yeah just two months ago uh it’s winter time but these things you know I will say that um these trailer sailers go
Pretty quick some of them uh some are on the market longer especially during the winter but uh we started selecting our boats a week ago a bunch of them already sold already G so we had to go back to the well yeah had to update luckily new
Ones came on the market but um that’s my number three pick of the day want to uh vote him up let’s score it up score it up all right Kenneth we’re on to your uh last of your three last of my three and this one is a 1982 compact Hutchin 23 oh
Yeah for 6 grand and says it’s located in Bethlehem New Hampshire not sure where they sail it there but this could be like Lake winnipauk which be a really nice spot for it I would agree because there’s no water in Bethlehem it doesn’t look like unless unless there’s a pond
Or Reservoir there and that’s about it anyway really pretty boat they’ve made like 600 of these they’re still making them yeah like the fourth I think they’re like on their fourth or fifth generation of the compact 23 that’s got to be wiip Baki that looks yeah definitely and so this comes it has
A8 horsepower Yamaha off the back there it’s got some you know new things on it uh it’s in good shape sail covers head sell rolling furly and all that it’s got a bimy and a Dodger it does have Bim and Dodger no photos of showing that looks
Pretty dry there got an electric uh build pump down there with a float switch right there um yeah yeah it’s got obviously got comes with the trailer of course that’s why we’re doing this yep uh but we looked at a few of these there
Are a few of these in our in our when we did some research on these so obviously they’re a popular boat they look very um beamy so they look probably pretty darn comfortable oh there’s a little got to have that yes your outboard looks like it’s functioning
That’s great um trailer yeah it’s got a little little B Sprint on there and Sloop rig and roller ferling too I believe it is roller ferling and uh I just said I just saw uh that the sales are in good shape um it holds 40 gallons
Of fresh water it’s got a sink and a white gas stove I may imagine that’s alcohol stove but get this it was sailed to the Bahamas Yeah Yeah by the previous owner uh wouldn’t go there now maybe no right yeah there’s like a watch out being murdered in the Bahamas right now
Uh and uh apparently this owner has a whole work file that’s been done on this boat so so these are very seaworthy boats obviously and so you can take them out on the ocean you can take them on a on a reservoir if you had to or does it
Work um that’s a cool boat I mean the fact that these compacts are still made is mindboggling again yeah I think there’s there you know not high maintenance they like I said they look beamy maybe they’re not the fastest boat but they’re going to be a really
Comfortable ride did you say fast let’s look at the sailboat data okay I believe this one is the Mark I uh based on the year um interesting very shallow Keel yeah so yeah it’s a very shallow K in this Max sha is only uh two and a/ qu feet that’s
Beam is nearly 8T at 7.83 so for for its length it’s fairly fairly beam sure holds 14 gallons of water which is nice well it said more than that it said 40 that might be a little mistake I to check well this one his went to the Bahamas so maybe it’s retrofitted right
Yeah I was going to say um and look at this s display of 19.28% so for at at uh 23t you’ve got 40 gallons of water and a head and you can basically go anywhere in this boat apparently to the because it has yeah uh
And and if you don’t like uh where you are in Bethlehem New Hampshire you can put it on your trailer and drive it down to Winn pasak yeah you come down here to Camden laun come yeah take us for sale we never been on one of these it be cool
One yeah so fun as fun pick a little different from uh some of the other ones maybe not as traditional traditional uh the sheer line is not as beautiful but I think a very practical boat and probably easy to sail um if you again sort of in
The starter mode of boats this would be a really nice one for $6,000 uh outboard boat and trailer and this boat has been looks like it’s been loving lovingly maintained uh and given the age of 1982 uh you know it looks like clean up you can clean that up easy yeah wax and
Buff it up um but uh really kind of a pretty boat in my opinion I think it has sort of a cape Dory look to it it does and I don’t think it’s um I I think it’s not unattractive I think it’s a handsome I think it’s a decent looking boat I
Think it’s a decent looking boat and like you said you can you could sail you sell this on a lake sell on the Ocean Take It to the Bahamas exactly that’s a nice pick Ken all right that’s my third of the six six and then we we’ve got
Some honorable mentions coming up but we’re going to Let’s uh let’s score this one up yeah all right nice pick can no sixes no sixes I’m not putting any six now I swear all right so we have four honorable mentions four uh and uh these are wonderful boats and either one any
One of these would be ideal so we’re just going to mention them quickly we’ll have the links in the description below but these didn’t make the top six but they’re worthy of mention and we just finished with a compact 23 and if that felt a little big for you we have a comp
Pack 19f footer here for sale for $88,500 down in Milford Connecticut and not a lot of pictures but it’s a 19t pocket Cruiser fully equipped trailer with a five horsepower outboard so um you know it’s very similar here’s the brochure that it came with uh it’s a
193 and you can see the you have a little outboard here it’s you know just a little pocket Cruiser a little bow Sprint uh easy to sale uh here’s your trailer there’s your outboard that looks in you know perfect shape and here’s one picture of down below so not a lot of
Information but you know it’s it’s made by Compact and we know that these are durable long lasting boats they’ve been around forever they’re still around and I just think uh if you’re looking for something a little bit smaller uh and you want to sell maybe more on some
Lakes or uh some other areas or even you know do some Coastal sailing this would be an ideal boat yeah yeah exactly just a little smaller probably a little easier to handle a little quicker in the turn but yeah yeah uh but it’s compact so we know they’re we know they’re good
Boats um all right so my second uh honorable mention is if you’re looking for a little something a little sportier a little spicier you want to do some racing it’s a 1984 j22 uh $7,000 uh located down in statford Connecticut now I used to race on these down in uh
Baltimore Harbor when I lived down there after graduating college and these things are a gas to sale and race uh little be uh is her name here she is on her trailer being towed by a pickup um sales look uh like they’re in nice shape
Uh yeah she’s got a uh 2021 North sales class Main and a North sales Bigfoot class jib as of 2022 and an older Spiner and a sper pole new standing rigging as of 2020 all running rigging new as of 2020 as well and a 1984 Triad single
Axle trailer with a six P six horsepower Yamaha long shaft outboard um a little blurry but there she’s a night but these are slick little boats so if you’re looking for something fast and sporty and maybe want to do some racing this would be a good choice for you beautiful
Yeah I like it it looks looks like a little sporty little little little sports car oh yeah exactly yeah exactly so a little bit different than everything else we’ve shown but I thought it’d be worth uh sharing that’s my second I got to get a jbo in there
Yeah you got to get a jbo in there for crying out loud all right Kenneth what’s your your first honorable mention let’s hit it okay my first one is a uh 18t Marshall sanderling um it’s basically a catbat and uh built in 1972 it’s for 9,5 500 so
On the highest end today located down in ashin Mass which is just outside of Framingham so just uh west of the Boston area beautiful catbat look at the look at the high combings looks like it’s beautifully maintained it’s got a nice Honda engine on there it’s um so this is
Hall number 244 yep so this is a five horsepower Honda it’s a for cycle um has the Marshall hinged Mast and these nice little bronze steps on the transom to get in and out and it’s got some new interior cushions all new lines lazy Jacks line clutches reefing lines Rudder
Lock bar and the trailer so perfect little trailer boat similar to the one that you looked at the hair shof hair the Mas the Tabernacle here so you can put your Mas up easily easy to get in get out obviously very low draft get you anywhere it’s it’s an again comfortable
Boat you’re not it’s not like the J we’re just talking about for Speed you’re going for comfort and exactly nice big man on this look at the look at the mass I mean the boom bo on this it is G rig and uh if anyone’s interested
In they go look at the uh interview I did with Captain Neil Park he had a marshall 22 that he um retrofit into a gaff rig Sloop you put a bow sprad on it move the mask back a little bit and uh improve some ventilation down below but
These are really cool boats Marshall’s been around forever making really really pretty boats uh they’re still making them today this one looks like it needs a good clean maybe a painting in the interior but uh like you can see these cushions are new um it’s like a work in
Progress but boy I think you just have the last bit do on this absolutely you’re good to go and you can take it anywhere um all right so that’s your uh first honorable mention what’s your second honorable mention all right so the second one’s a little bit different
This is not so much for sale as it is asking asking for a partnership so it’s it’s owned by a nonprofit called sailing ships Marine okay so this is a Bristol Corinthian sailboat pretty and it’s located in um bodenham Maine yep and these Bristols as you know cuz I had a
Bristol love the Bristols um it’s they look at that they just so beautifully I believe it’s a fractional rig um so they’re looking for four Partners to be a quarter share so the reason I threw this one in is because that’s sort of what we’re doing
We have three of us we’re Partners y sometimes I go out sometimes you go out with your family and Josh goes out with his having correct so you’re not using it all the time so if you’re a starter boat what a great little starter boat if
You had four people that want to do put this together it’d be fantastic and you know a couple interesting notes Here well first of all you’re right so what a great low bared entry of $850 for a quarter ship a quarter interest uh in this boat and it helps defay cost of
Ownership in terms of Maintenance and everything else it’s also open to an all female partnership uh but they’re not wed to that so uh if you’re a female sailor and want to find like-minded uh women to have a partnership in a in a
Boat what a cool way to do it um and I so I think that’s neat and then uh last but not least look at this Carl alberg design Carl alberg design that’s she’s so pretty we love it they sah are halfway between typhoon and an enom which I thought was an interesting
Description of her yeah and a little bit like the uh the sea Sprite too so it’s it’s all of these sort of wrapped into one and for 850 bucks you’re not going to get hurt now this we I don’t think has a trailer now we it it is
Trailerable but this one does not so that’s the one thing about this but I’m sure if if you you know you could get you can trailer this bow that’s the point that’s the point that you could trailer this and you could uh do an overnight honor uh and because I think
There’s an area for a head here up in the in the v birth right there uh yeah that’s a cool boat so I see why you bringing in into show today because uh we bought uh we did a partnership on our boat with the three of us and uh you can
Do this with a with four people and have a blast you have people to sail with when they’re available or you can take it yourself I mean low low money to get in on it so just just a different way to look at I thought I I like that a lot
Ken nice nice nice call all right so let’s uh we’re going to tally up our scores now and come back with our individual uh top three picks and then we’ll combine our scores to find the ultimate winner for today so uh hang on there one be close it’s going to be close all
Right all right so I’m going to go first with my scores and I’m going to go 3 2 one in that order uh and I had a tie for a second and what I did was was I went to the usability column and and you’ll have seen where that is on the scorecard
Earlier in the show and I had a tiebreaker there in terms of points and I did usability because these are trailer sailers so uh the idea behind usability is how easy it is to get out there and use this boat so that was my tiebreaker column so my number three
Boat today was uh Ken’s um whoops which one is it this one the 1976 SE Sprite she was my number three and I just think this is really pretty boat I love it uh number two was uh Ken’s compact 23 at oh sorry it’s the score for uh the third place was um
19 and the score for second place was also 19 but the tiebreaker was 4 and2 on the Compact and the usability column versus four for the C spring so uh the comback 23 was my uh number two and my number one uh was and this might be
Controversial but it it it worked for me uh this was at 20 points was the cape Dory typhoon Weekender very nice picks very nice picks you’ll see that you have some similarities here that right right yeah yeah and just for the record we have not shared our scores with each
Other so this is you’re seeing this all right so let me have it yeah you’ll have to punch the tabs so for me the number three was that se Sprite really yep okay so hang on the 1976 C spray so that was number three came in at 18 all right uh
For me the number two was the Dark Harbor I got 185 on that one I just just you’re just such a sucker for these old I get it I get it how many points did she get this one had 185 185 okay yep and then I agree with you I had the
Typhoon at at 20 y right here wow I just there’s something about this boat it’s just it’s precious it’s just fantastic I agree with you it CHS off a lot of boxes checks a lot of boes all right let’s uh let’s combine our scores now we’ll come
Back with the ultimate three two and winner all right here we go all right here we go ladies and gentlemen uh we have not had this situation before so uh bear with us so pretty serious pretty serious and it almost came to fistic us right it almost got ugly uh so um we
Have a tie so we don’t have a third place boat we have a tie for second and it was a tie at 37 combined points and we had too many tie Breakers in the different columns we couldn’t reach Josh on the phone and so we’re stuck with a
Tie for second place and uh Ken had uh the Dark Harbor 17 as his second place and I had the uh C Sprite uh so we’re tied at 37 points for second place and I think that’s fair there’s something for everybody something that’s new and easier to maintain and then something and
Beautiful like the dark har okay and then this should come as no surprise number one hot H hot uh the beautiful 1978 Cape Dory typhoon uh the venerable Cape Dory typhoon the Imp the Imp uh she is beautiful uh we wish there are more pictures but she’s number one this week

Nice edit. Good job. And I love those typhoons too.
hey there.. compac 23 owner down in Phippsburg.. so glad to see that you considered the compac for this video. They are pretty cool boats with a lot of positive aspects. Maybe we will come up to Camden for a visit one of these summers – take you for a sail! have a fun trip next week. jt
Glad to see a large number of long keel vessels. The # 1 pick I can go along with but surprised that the 26 footer was not even in the running , classic wooden hull ,she was my #1 pick . I'm just old school I guess.
I started out with a trailer sailer – Venture 21. Years later I bought a Canadian boat a Challenger 7.4 (~25') on a trailer. Now my current boat is still a sort of trailer sailer since it is hauled, launched and transported on a trailer. Yeah, it is a Brownell hydraulic trailer and I don't own it.
So much for that, I do have a bit of a quibble about not having a mooring. Here on MDI it is pretty easy to get a mooring for a small, shallow draft boat since moorings for those boats can be in parts of the harbor where you can't get a bigger boat and they don't need much swinging room. Rigging and launching a trailered boat can be quite a chore. The hardest part is stepping the mast. Anything bigger than about 23'-24' will really require two people to step the mast. My Venture was also quite a chore to get properly lined up on the trailer when hauling since the swing keel had to land in a 4" wide slot on the trailer.
Looking at your choices, the Dark Harbor 17 is not a boat you will want to sail off of the trailer because as a carvel planked wooden boat it will dry between sailings and will have to take up for a day or two after launch to stop leaking and stiffen the hull up. So it is a boat you launch, sail for the season and haul. Also launching and hauling that deep draft boat with the trailer will be a chore, particularly getting it back onto the trailer correctly and realistically you will need a boom truck to step/unstep the mast. Also, you will need at least a mid-sized pickup to tow this boat. but that applies to everything except the Macgregor. Also, except for the deeper draft boats you are going to need a pretty steep ramp and to disconnect the trailer to launch/haul the boats.
Nice boats overall.
I see a lot of really nice boats here. But only one is a wooden boat. Thats automatically my favorite. Plus shes nigh on 100 years old, sails on fresh water and is absolutely immaculate. Chef's kiss.
I've got to go with the Compac 23 for the win, always been a favorite of mine. My number 2 would have to be the Mac 26D for the interior space. My number 3 would likely be the Herreshoff 22, again for ease of set up with the tabernacle style mast. The full keel boats are pretty, but can be difficult to launch from a trailer, which is why I stay away from them in this category.
All great boats! Think of these boats no yard bills no crane and pure fun. Cheers
I would take the Com Pac over any of those boats, they hold their value, than the Typhoon and the Sea Sprite. Funny I made my picks before the end of the video we had the same boats different order besides the dark horse which would have been my number 4.
the Herrschoff
Dark Harbor is sweet. Like the Typhoon I once owned, full-keel boats are not easily launched nor retrieved with a trailer, I sold because of the cost of being lifted on the trailer. Trailerable, yes . . . workable on a ramp . . . not so much.
Another great video guys. My very first boat (1970’s) was a Typhoon…and many years later I owned a Sea Sprite 23. Both are beautiful and sail like they are scaled down BIG yachts…heavy, safe, beautiful, and incredible. ( Thank you Carl Alberg!) Unless they are being trailered to distant cruising grounds for new adventures, I ( my 2 cents) would consider neither to be a true trailer-sailor. These are heavy full keel boats and it’s no quick thing rigging them up to get out on the water. Other than that, both were not only beautiful, heart-stopping classics, and sailed like heavy weatherly safe yachts…but I was in awe of the build quality. Cape Dory and CE Ryder did NOT cut corners, and as a result corners ultimately did not stay in business because it was so expensive and labor intensive to build these timeless classics that were worth many times over what they were sold for.
Cool video.
I just picked up a 1978 Cape Dory Typhoon Weekender in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for $2,000. (The previous owner was asking more but a couple of beers and a great conversation got the deal my way lol)
I used to live in Goffstown, New Hampshire, 2019 & 2020….Damn covid, and I miss New England.
I plan on sailing my new found love Cape Dory this spring/summer up the east coast from West Palm Beach, Florida to Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
I just started a YouTube channel on it. Just a few videos in and about the trailer but sailing coming in the near future.
My YouTube channel name is Tony Alexander.
Cheers.
