Hi all,
Trying my first bike tear down and rebuild.
How can I remove this seat post from a old Schwinn? If it matters I was told this may be 1977 Schwinn.
Tried a hammer, wd40, and vice grips but I’d like to keep the chrome as nice as possible.

Lots of liquid wrench and a vice to clamp on the seat post, turning it slowly but surely. I’ve also freed a seat post by tightening a quill stem and using it as a big wrench essentially. I don’t know if that’s applicable this case as your seat post is tapered

Plain blade screw driver into the slot and twist to open the tube.
Penetrating oil into the slot and all round the seat tube.
Heat on the frame, if you’re planning to repaint it then use enough heat to scorching the paint if required.
Slide hammer with an expanding collet to pull the seat post up and out.
Or.
If you are replacing the seat post.
Clamp the seat post in a vice and twist/pull.
I’d take the cranks out and hammer it down lightly, should free it up given enough penetrating oil.
Go to the Sheldon Brown website and look up stuck seatposts. And then go search YouTube for RJ the bike guy and stuck seatpost. You’ll find some good advice there.
But you’re going to need leverage to twist that thing to break it free. I’d just resign to having to replace the post probably. Big pipe wrench, and brute force, after soaking it with penetrating oil for several days in a row.
