Hi guys this is Laura from da GU and today we’re gonna be talking about bike drawing I’m here down in Colchester Connecticut at the airline trail and we’re gonna talk about getting started and bike drawing and the simple equipment that I’m using to have fun and

Exercise my dog with a bike so let’s check it out So let’s start with a little bit of the equipment that I’m using for bike drawing first you need a bike might happens to be about 15 years old that I just got a tune-up on it I found in my parent’s garage got a tune-up ready to

Go and then you also need your towline or your line that’s gonna come out from your bike and attached to your dog and I also use a contraption called a walkie dog that I’ve kind of repurposed I’ll put a link to the in the description below a walkie dog is generally used for

Your dog to bike next to you or on your side but I’ve repurposed it as a way to keep that line out of the front of my tire like so out of the bike tire path so that it doesn’t get tangled up so I’m

Going to show you how I use that as well and I just need those three things the bike something like a noodle or a walkie dog to keep the line off of the bike tire and then just your line that goes out to your dog oh and of course a

Harness so you need an appropriate harness for hugging I’m using a howling dog Alaska but they make lots of different types of harnesses for this kind of sport and it’s just so much fun to prepare for bike drawing I need to find a path that’s relatively flat it

Can have some hills but your dog is going to do better on a mostly flat surface especially when they’re starting out and the terrain or the surface of that path needs to be something like dirt or grass that’s not going to hurt your dog’s joints or tear up their paws

I wouldn’t do this on pavement where you’re gonna get a lot of friction on their paws as well as wear down their joint so you want to try to find something that’s dirt or grass and relatively level before I go out bike touring I put mushers wax on my dog’s

Pads so I want to preserve her pads toughen them up but I want to keep them safe as well so the mushers wax tends to help them stay intact and not rip open that kind of thing so it’s very helpful for that I’ll put a link to that down below as well

So I put the mushers backs on and then I hook her up and we’re ready to go jewelry enjoying your dog is going to be out front of your bike or your scooter depending on what you’re using and they’re going to be pulling out front

You want your line to be tight and you want to build them up to longer courses they can run really really fast but it might only start with them being able to go a short distance so you want to really build them up just like if you

Were training for a race if you’re looking to teach commands to I start them on the ground while they’re walking teaching them left and right where you can call them joon-ha depending on the terminology you want to use your dog doesn’t really care as long as it’s something you’re gonna remember

And then once you’ve trained a halt a gr or left and a right on the ground and a very strong stop or an easy you’re ready to go ahead and start on the bike when you’re on the bike it’s easy to help them make the right decision because if

You need to go left you’re gonna start turning your bike left and they’re typically going to take that cue and go to the left same thing with an easier a halt if you pump your brakes they’re probably going to slow down when you ask them to easy and if you stop they’re

Going to stop because they are attached to the bike so you want to make sure you have really good brakes on your bike or your scooter also before you start out you want to make sure that you walk your dog out and just don’t start them on a

Cold run from the bike I know my dog gets really excited when we go out biking so I need to make sure that I walk her and warm her up for a few minutes before we get started another important cue to teach is a leave it or an on by which means ignore

The things around you and continue to go straight but you’ll find that a lot of dogs that you would generally call you know maybe a distractible or like to sniff once they’re working or you know out front of your bike they ignore everything and they just love doing

Their job and they love running so I’m just going to show you a little clip right here of us working out on the trail so you can see what it looks like live [Applause] My drawing is my new favorite activity to do with my dog so if you loved this video maybe you should check it out you can also instead of having your dog pull out front use something like a walkie dog to have them bike next to you

If you want to start in what you feel is a more safe environment or you can start with a scooter instead of a bike where it’s much easier to bail but if you think this looks like fun go ahead and try it with your dog make sure

You’re safe warm them up put my shoes acts on your paws and and start slow and you’re ready to go you guys have a great day and happy training

  1. Hi – great video..Im going to start doing bikejoring with my 1 year old springer & this video helped a lot..Ive subbed …Thanks 👋

  2. Dogs need to be trained to COMMANDS prior to ever getting hooked up to a bike or anything else!! You didn't even bother, you just hooked up to the bike and went, this is totally inexcusable and dangerous. I'm sorry this video is available because a lot of people will be hurt, just starting out cold like this.

  3. What do you think of shoes vs. mushers wax? I just found out my dog has lots of allergies. Could I introduce my husky to this in the neighborhood? Or do I need to find a dirt trail for all runs?

  4. My dogs go absolutly crazy when they hear me say, "Who wants to go". They love it. If we haven't gone to the beach in a couple of days they will bug me to death untill I take them. It really is a blast.

  5. Hi, I’m about to start teaching my 10 month old puppy Joring on skates. My previous dog I trained to do it with me and trained him left and right. Would you want to collaborate to post a video about how I’m teaching her that for your channel?

  6. My 3 year old knows how to do this. I'm trying to teach her neice. She keeps trying to run into her. I'm trying to figure out what that metal bar name is. It's some type of separator.

  7. My dog is a lab/pit mix, we got him from a friend who couldn’t keep him anymore. He doesn’t really listen to anything despite me working with him so much. How do I go about this because he’s such an active dog I can’t keep up with him walking. He’s learned to heel, and I really want to try this but I’m afraid he’s going to make a sharp turn to the right after something and I’m going to go toppling over. I have a side attachment, but again I’m so scared to try it in the event he does go darting off 😅

  8. this may seem obvious but im very curious to find a logical answer on this: What is the differnce between letting thedog run infront as opposed to beside the bike? Bikejoring sport aside, is there any real advantage to having the dog beside the bike if going for a regular run? if its not a race i mean. If we are just using this to condition the dog which would be better? If the only difference is the pulling, is it easy to stop thedog ?

  9. Hoooow hoooow is stop
Go go go go is… duh go
    Paw around… right turn
    Shake around… left turn.
She doesn’t know left and right but she knows what paw is shake and paw.

  10. Excellent video, I used my x roommate's pit bulls, one at a time to pull me around the block a couple of times to get exercise for them! They loved it. Also people would pull over and give me a 👍 and say that that is awesome how the dog's love doing that! ❤️😍

  11. Great video and info. I will be getting a Siberian Husky in a couple if months. Of course she'll be a puppy, still. What is an appropriate age to begin teaching her and myself to Bikejore? Im thinking of getting the scooter, I already own a bike. Is the scooter easier to begin with? Thank you for any advice.

  12. I've just discovered bike joring and canicross on YouTube and am fascinated with it. I would love to do this with my 2 yrs old Border Collie. He's a farm dog and reactive to strange people and dogs when I bring him to town. I have started clicker training to help but he will only take hot dogs as a treat and only at home. When in town he won't accept food. Any tips? Also I would love to find clubs in the USA doing this but can't find anything. Seems all doing this sport are in Europe.

  13. That's neat haha. I've never heard the term "bikejoring" before haha.
I just searched like "how to train my dog to tow me on a bike" and this come up.
The internet does have it's good points. 😏

The equipment looks handy. I was just using a long leash held in my hand, and a good harness thing I was given that works great.

My dogs a big boy (and a good boy.:) who's very fit and suprisingly fast. Runs 60km/hr + and has alot of endurance too. I have two big 100 acre estates just out of city that I stay in and my parents on the back one… and I've got a few buggys and quad bikes that me and the family run around the property/s in and their place and back etc, and he loves running around in front of them everywhere we go. Especially my parents. (Think he likes them best even haha, and always goes with them or just walks up to their place to stay with them.)
So along with getting kinda spoilt haha he's gotten very fit and healthy from it all and has huge rippling muscles all over.

Anyway I figure he'd be great at this but the problem is when I go on the mountain bike with a lead he just wants to run me at the same pace I go. Rather than in front (like he does with the motored bikes/buggies) and tow me.
Understandably, since I've always trained him to "heel" when I'm walking which he does well, and usually pulling back on the leash makes him to slow down to keep pace or stop. So when he feels pressure on the lead from towing me……

Anyways I was just wondering if you (or anyone) could give any help or advice on how to get around this issue?

    Thanks.

  14. My dog loves the Musher's wax! He took to it right away. He loves the toe massages and it gives us a real opportunity to bond! Thank you for all of your tips! 🌞

  15. Also, applying the Musher's Wax allows you to check his paws on an ongoing basis for wear and tear, roughness or injuries. 🙂

  16. my dog runs along side of me on and off lead but i cant get him to pull the lead because i taught him never to pull the lead when walking . how can i encourage him to pull the lead when i am on the bike ?

  17. Great idea on re-purposing the Walky Dog! I didn't think of that! I have one, and since I just left my scooter noodle and 2-dog bungee line at the park yesterday and it was nowhere to be found after going back :(, I need to order a new one. Was looking into the antennas or another scooter noodle, but I'm thinking of trying this option. Thank you!

  18. I have used the walky stick with my border collie retriever she absolutely loves it!! I now have a Labrador and I have been working to get him to do the bike, I know he would love it if he would just walk forward but seems to be more terrified of the bike and the peddles I can’t even hardly get on the bike. He seems to warm up to the bike walking the bike but freezes if I sit on it. I’ve looked into bike joring or even scooter because the scooter does not have peddles. I am looking for any kind of suggestions that may get him to move forward instead of freezing up or pulling back? Has anyone else had this problem?

  19. i have a 1 year, 1 month old female unspayed golden retriever. Can we do 10 minute ish runs on easy turain to build endurance? Ik her bones arent quite done devoloping yet, so id take it easy. A few times a week at most.
