Some of the projects that are happening and about to happen around Glasgow. Most of this was filmed from October 2023 to January 2024. Projects i talk about in this video are Avenues project, Byres road, South city way, South west city way, North east active travel route, Connecting woodside, Nithsdale Road, Argyle street, Connecting Yorkhill and Kelvingrove.

In November 2021 Glasgow hosted the 2021 United Nations climate change conference cop 26 and before this Glasgow city council announced ambitious plans to build a dense active Travel network by 2031 based upon a vision that active travel becomes a first choice for everyday Journeys the network is to be

Created with the aim that schools are within 400 m of the main active travel routes while no home is more than 800 M from the segregated cycling infrastructure it’s January 2024 and there are a few cycling infrastructure projects under construction in and around Glasgow just now so I went out my

Bike for a we look around to check out the latest progress first of all let’s look at the Avenues The Avenues project is an ambitious plan to rejuvenate some of the main streets in the City Center cambage Street and Sak hog Street Sak hog Street was a pilot for the Avenues

Project and the first first phase were from Charing Cross to rad Street was completed in 2019 this new phase was started in September 2023 and will extend down to Hope Street this phase also includes infrastructure on Cambridge Street that will connect suc Hall Street to gcbe Road and the

Future overground project The Avenues project is15 million pound investment in Glasgow City Center the key aim of the Avenues program is the creation of a network on streets of New attractive accessible safe sustainable and easily maintained routes throughout the city center that are people focused encourage active travel and are more attractive to

Residents workers visitors and investors the overground project will create a safer connection between kadan’s underground and St George’s Road by linking up new city road under the M8 Woodside Viaduct eliminating the use of this underpass hopefully this creates a space that is more user friendly for people who walk wheel or

Cycle Holland Street and pit Street both of these streets run perpendicular to sukol Street and parallel to each other Holland Street is going to be one way for cars and is getting reduced to one lane this will create more space for people to feel more comfortable moving

Around and using pit Street will have bir directional cycle Lane on the West Side connecting the cycle Lane on Hall Street to waterlow Street and the West City way this street has a hill on it and it is not the easiest Hill to climb on a bike so we’ll possibly not get used

As much when complete one thing I’ve definitely noticed is how quickly they seem to be put in the cycle Lane in hopefully this will be the standard for building the rest of the active Travel network in Glasgow recently the contract for a Gail Street West was awarded to

Ron construction this is part of the Avenue’s project and will feature rainar Gardens to help mitigate water flow when there is a downpour from entering the low-level Railway Lane that runs underneath a Gil Street this section will run from Kingston bridge to the intersection of agail Street and Union

Street as far as I know that’s everything that’s happening in and around the Avenues just now it also has to be said that the Avenues will be more people focused rightfully taking space back from cars and that’s the way it should be as for far too long cars have

Had far too space in and around Glasgow City Center next up we’re going to have a look at the South City way this is by far the most successful of all the cycle lanes that have been built in Glasgow so far I think this is in part the fact

That it runs through a busy street is a direct line to the city center and also has a park at the other end of what’s been built so far having Queens Park at this end opens up the route for so many people to use during the daily hours

Over the last couple C of months The Junction at C Street has been slowly transforming with clear space and directions for cyclist starting to emerge the current Works will see the continuation along Bridgegate onto King Street and stopping at trate finally connecting the South City way to the

City center the good news is it’s looking like it will be complete in the next couple of months work has also started on CDE street from goral Street to Salt Market upgrading the spaces for people cycing that was put in place during the pandemic from one way to to BU

Directional this work is also going at a surprisingly fast pace and I look forward to seeing how it’s going to look over the next few months now let’s have a look at buyer Road this project is coming along about as quickly as you can expect given its location it’s also

Taking a bit more time as it gets closer to the University Avenue Junction as only one side can be worked at a time to minimize disruption this phase is expected to be complete in August 2024 and also includes Church Street that Forks off buers road here buers Road

Will have a cycle Lane at each side whereas Church Street is going to be oneway traffic flowing downhill with a counterflow cycle Lane going uphill there has been some business objections with the biggest concern being lost customers due to fewer parking spaces it has to be pointed out that in some

Instances it’s actual business owner that takes the space right inside the premises and as a driver if I was going to visit buyer road to shop the last thing I would do is take the car buyer’s Road has excellent public transport links and one of glasgow’s busiest underground stations there is really no

Need for an able-bodied person to take their car and visiting this road with the nearby Glasgow University there has always been a high amount of students living in the area for local residents this is a street that practically provides everything on your doorstep eliminating the need to use a car for

Short Journeys buyer road is possibly the project that excites me the most as I can’t wait for the day to come when you will be able to travel the full length on a protected cycle Lane the north section of BU road is due to start in early

2025 York Hill and Kelvin Grove will soon be connected by a cycle Lane at the Junctions of ail Street Radner Street and suc Hall street workers due to start here this summer creating good protection for cyclists at both Junctions now let’s head south from here to the Transport Museum and look at the

Program of the Govern foot Bridge the Govern tup partic bridge is 110 M swing bridge that when complete will carry pedestrians and cyclist across the river Cloud the main work is been carried out by Fan’s construction when ships need to pass the main span will rotate into this

Position on the south side of the river this project was initially planned to be complete in 2021 but delays prevented the project from starting on its original timeline the project finally started in early 20 22 and is expected to be complete this spring connecting Woodside was originally named Woodside

Mini Halland and already has this excellent gas Cube Road section in place other parts that have been completed are this section at Northwood Side Road and also this model filter at rabber Street and trok street with a prestan and cycle Crossing that offers a quiet route up to G Cube

Road there is also a greatway filter for bikes at this part of Hill Road a road that has been blocked off for cars for years this is slowly transforming this area into a perfect low traffic neighborhood and a more attractive place to live in and move around consultation

Is due to start soon on Sison Street this wide vibrant street is perfect for putting a cycle Lane on creating an alternative option for residents moving around this area as well as traveling to and from the city center this more likely will connect the spaces for people cycling in hofor Street and

Bowland Drive to the lane on G Cube road work is due to start this summer on St George’s Road connecting the cycle Lane on gas Cube road to The Junction at Charing Cross and the cycle Lane on Sako Street Avenue this is a link that I’m quite

Excited to see start as it’s been in the planning stages for what seems like an eternity this section in my opinion should see a significant uptake in cycle as a more attractive and more favorable travel option for residents in this part of the city the Glasgow evening times recently published an article informing

What cycle lanes are being built next most of this was information that’s available on the Glasgow city council website but there was one reported route that I couldn’t find and it’s this route from the South City Way along cder Street crossing P sh Road onto and along

Ndale drive towards ndale Road it would be interesting to see the plans for cyclist at this roundabout and Junction after here the route goes onto and along the Lan of Nale road crossing the St Andrew’s Drive section of the Southwest City way I’m hoping that this project is

Delivered at the same speed and has the same look as St Andrew’s drive as this is really good infrastructure for being bire on one side of the carriageway this route will continue onwards to Bella Houston Park opening up the route to its surrounding area and last but not least work is due

To start early 2024 on the northeast active travel route this one is of particular interest to me as it featured in a video I did last summer I will put a link to that video in the comment section this will see improved Pavements Crossings and drainage at Northgate

Wallace well Brimfield Road and Red Road hopefully with a much needed connection to the city center along the very wide Peters Hill Road that’s about it for now but all that’s left to say is that when Glasgow city council announced that they were going to create an active Travel

Network I was skeptical at first but now that I’m seeing all these parts of the jigsaw starting to move into place massive pieces of infrastructure knocking down barriers and linking communities at the pace starting to pick up it’s beginning to look like Glasgow is taking shape to be a true clean say

  1. Great video! I'm still waiting for a cycle lane on Great Western Road around Woodlands, trying to cycle there is daunting because cars can park in the bus lane…

  2. Nice update, thank you. I use the South route heading into town a lot and it makes a big difference. Be good if something could be done in Shawlands though.

  3. Oh this is exciting! Shame funding has been cut for other parts of Scotland, though. The cycling infrastructure in South Ayrshire, for example is very poor. The few cycle lanes we have are used by drivers as parking spaces 😢

  4. Jamaica Street bridge has a cycle lane, but then it disappears at Bridge St underground!
Wouldn't it make more sense to continue it down to Shawlands?

    Ans-Of course

Why did they not continue it?

  5. Another great waste of money by Scottish gov and Glasgow city council, barely see cyclists using the routes as they are not legally required to use them. Would have been better installing a metro, that way it might benefit local businesses.

  6. It looks great and I certainly would be more encouraged to pop up from Ayrshire to spend time seeing the sights around Glasgow. I just recently bought the Trailmaps of Glasgow City so hoping most of this is marked on it. Having said that as a disabled person who visits Byres Road on a regular basis to collect my fish by car I’m thinking I might not be able to do so. I’m also wondering if this along with the LEZ is going push visitors out of the city?
