FRANCE VAN TRIP. SEPTEMBER ’23.
The weather is still gloriously hot, and so we continue our Discovery of the Dordogne region with a walking tour of the beautiful village of LA ROQUE-GAGEAC.
I’m on my own for this one….(giving Bernie a bit of respite from the heat….and quite a few steps.)…. so I head out to explore this fabulous site.
Renowned as one of the ‘most beautiful villages of France’, La Roque-Gageac lies at the foot of towering Limestone cliffs along the banks of the Dordogne.
I walk along its’ cobbled streets, and hike up a ‘crazy’ staircase to it’s fort made out of Troglodyte caves, with the most stunning views over the river and valley.
Then find some much needed respite from the heat in the exotic gardens of palms, banana and bamboo plants that are able to grow here due to being south facing with shelter from winds by the cliff.
A beautiful spot…..but get there early….before the tourist buses arrive.
It gets busy quite quickly!!

[Applause] We are just going to have a little quick wcky to um The Rock Village right from the campsite we went sorry left from the campsite we went right this morning to the shatel village now we’re going to the rock face Village um it’s late in the evening because it’s

Been so hot today we’re probably just going to have a quick look tonight and then have a proper Wy of it tomorrow I’ll film The River Bank as well it’s absolutely beautiful I’ll do that later oh no Bernie’s going take a look now he’s not seeing it

Yet beer here you can let’s see how in the Rocks up there they are what they call grots I think they’re going for it they’re a bit quick them CLS woohoo yeah let’s go and that is the river and you can actually swim in this River you can take a dip

And there was loads of people in it earlier you can hire your canoes and you can go for a super super canoe like them two over there zoom zoom zoom and there is also a little bar there as well gorgeous isn’t it yep absolutely gorgeous back in you’re older then let’s

Get going okie dokie let’s go I think there’s a chatow up ahead looks like you have to go on the main road here for a little bit good look at that in this place you have to look up look at that that’s absolutely beautiful oh you can walk up there Bernard there’s a

Stairway you get to the top and look out the Viewpoint as yeah there a little uh just a public park with Ventures under trees so you can have your lunch there’s a car park over there hey car park well for a quick little wcky I mean

This kind of gives us a clue as to what you’re looking at and then there’s the river boat cruise I might talk maybe talk Bernie into doing that you never know but that is pretty spectacular with the river the chatau the river burnard on his bik what more could you ask

For oh that early note’s even open cool right let’s go and park up the bikes parking vill now Bernie’s not with me at the minute he has headed back to the campsite um because it’s going to be hot and he does not want to do all of these

Steps so I’m doing this bit by myself and I will meet up with him later so let’s go up the step this is why birdie hasn’t come with me look at this it’s all very tropical so this is the AL do banan so these must all be banana trees I guess let’s Go oh very pretty plants was say it’s I feel like I’m in I feel like I’m in the in the jungle it’s bizarre a it’s very shaded this is where you need oh look up there there’s big nuts here we go let’s go up these steps yeah bu would not have been good

Doing this that’s for sure and there you go you see ban oh so we’re going to be higher now let’s go and what is this area of France famous for it’s F it’s duck there you go quack quack and another one that’s the church look at those bells they’re

Proper Bells they are ding-dong Bells a quick look in the little chapel so cute oh here we go now we’re getting further up look oh look at that that’s a pretty amazing view down the river getting high now got sour oh the Rocks s here oh look at that up there

Wow look at that you from here that’s gorgeous isn’t it oh look at the birds you get to go up the steps I think you go into the fort you go up to the top bunkers whoa that door knocker imagine living under that these houses under

That You’ be scared to death he going to fall on your head but you do get some fabulous views from up here that’s for sure the hous is down below the Rocks the chatau what the steps look at that these are people’s houses absolutely idilic isn’t [Applause]

It look like there’s a walk up there as well I’m not going to be going on a massive Hill walk today just doing the little village itself and I think we’re pretty much at the end of The Village here in the Rock okay yep that goes back down to the main

Road and you’ve got your little turrets so what I might do is I might actually just nip into the little fort and have a look in there let’s go check it out we’ll head back this way and we’ll check the fort out okay I am in the fort going in more

Steps what was say so apparently the staircase here coming up has 140 steps okay only the handrails are wooden staircase includes four small Landings and he wide enough of visitors to pass one another going in the opposite direction okay here we go this is the one we saw from outside let’s

Go I can see it we’re going up oh Wow oh my goodness going up there and in the meantime you get this spectacular view right let’s continue up the steps oh my goodness just gets better and better the how you get I’m getting bombarded by the [Laughter] birds can you see the more flying in we’re getting there slowly but surely

I am taking my time well this this is proper cut out of the stone stairs these are the stairs they were talking about 32 just 32 that’s of actual stone hold on to the rail yeah these steps are um not the easiest it says mind you head but I

Don’t have to worry cuz I’m only a short ass so it’s fine here we are look this is where you get the full view so you have the manw which is that little building there then you can see the basty D from here which is I

Think it may be up there on the hill I’ve been there it’s lovely and then obviously you have the river with the river boats you have the Village St Julian deac right in front of you down there somewhere you have shatow Castle ND which we visited on this trip which is

That big one down there you’ve got the Bader D marusac which is that viewing point up there right at the very top and that is part of um um some Gardens really really famous gardens that were um designed by the same guy that did versa

Um but yeah I’m not into Gardens so but if you’re into Gardens I think they’re worth visiting and then you’ve got shatow de the Mar tree which is the shadow around the corner but you can’t see it from me so there we are awesome I hope I got it all

Okay so I’m going to head back down and that was a lovely little uh treat Okie CI let’s head back down the stairs hold on tight yeah I’m going to use two hands for this camera’s going off and that was the for D Rock go and I really enjoyed

That right let’s head back down through the banana trees it’s quite nice to be under here now cuz it’s very very hot I think this little path is the uh it is it’s the the Bamboo Gardens but is an absolute Avenue of bamboo it’s gorgeous I actually didn’t know that bamboo grew that

Tool I thought you were only a little plant no apparently [Applause] not they’re enormous it’s a really really big Garden so if you are here in the height of the summer and you need some rest back from the heat um I suggest you come to the bangoo

Garden and the really nice thing is that they’ve put little chairs out you can have a little sit down if you want oh like that oh it’s so hot it’s quite nice sitting in the shade yeah not something i’ thought I would be uh wandering around in um in France but there you

Go you never know what you’re going to find a little walk down here get all the rocks in just been up there walk down here lots of bars and restaurants along the front here if you want something to eat or drink and it’s filling up because it is now exactly

Lunchtime I just walk along here along the river gorgeous view down the river it’s getting busy now oh here comes the boat it’s quite a cute picture you can see why they had to evacuate all the houses and the shops in uh 2010 can’t you when it all started to fall

Here come the bikes right let’s head back into town go and grab me bike we’re done that is uh super heat that’s enough for today

  1. Beautiful area. Many thanks. I noticed the weather in that area of France with temperatures currently only in the 50-60 F range during the day. Is this a video from last summer or last week? Thanks.

  2. I’ve been there a couple of times and it is a lovely place. I haven’t gone as high as you want, you need a good head for heights which I don’t have!
Rocamadour is also a really impressive place,
