I went to replace the shift and brake cables on my relatively old bike I bought used (2004 Trek 5200). To get the 9 speed cable out of the right shifter, I found you had to disassemble the lever almost completely. I am guessing this is just the nature of older parts. When I realized how complex the parts/springs were, I knew I was SoL. I took apart the left 2 speed shifter to try to gain a little more insight as to a possible path to reassembly but I’ve decided there is no hope and I just need to buy new shifters. Anyway the right shifter was completely gunked up (as you can see) and shifting poorly – probably was due anyways.
Posting this here to document my failure and also to see if anyone out there is interested in the parts or somehow has the level of expertise to clean and reassemble them. I’m assuming the number of hours required to fix them is > the price of new shifters.

The 9 speed shifters are near impossible to service. 7 and 8 speed are easy
