Did you click the shifter until it’s in the smallest cog before routing the cable?

That doesn’t look right. I usually see the side not the end of the cable end (button?).

If the shifter is is in the smaller gear position, then gently poke the head down a little while pulling the end of the cable, it should pop into place then.

Keep in mind that it only seats properly (and stays seated) when there is tension on the cable.
