Chain from rear hub gone

Had noticed that my gears had stopped changing, so looked into adjusting them… and noticed that the rear gear cable is just flapping around not connected to anything.

There should be a cable coming out of the rear hub that it should connect to… but it doesn’t seem to be there.

Anyone know how this might have happened and what the solution is?
