Hey! Glad this sub exists. I am new to cycling. I have a GT mountain bike. The front disc was rubbing so i thought i’d give my first bicycle repair a go. I youtubed a video about How To Fix Brake Disc Rubbing and proceeded to remove the wheel and front brake pads. I then pressed and depressed the front brake lever until the piston popped out and leaked fluid (as pictured). I was doing this to expose enough of the pistons to clean them but I pressed once too much

The guy in the video casually mentions halfway through his tutorial to be careful because this exact scenario could play out (blast!). I’m a newb, i didn’t know bikes have fluids!

One piston popped out and after ten lightyears i got it back in. I’m not sure if it’s in properly and I’m also not sure if there’s brake fluid in there anymore.

What do I do now? Fill up the fluid and proceed with the cleaning? Can I do the piston cleaning without fluid? The pistons barely come out now. Please help me not hate biking because i have loved it so far TIA!!

  1. You’re going to need to do a brake bleed, which is a process where excess air is removed from the brake lines and more fluid is added. The exact procedure varies by brand and special tools are required. You can buy a bleed kit for less than $20 on Amazon. I recommend doing an internet search for instructions to bleed your specific brand and model of brake.
