I’m having a hard time seeing what’s going on in the photos, but assuming by “pretty smooth,” you mean the threads on the skewer are worn, you have a couple options.

    1. Chase the threads on the skewer and see if that fixes it.
    2. If not, replace the skewer.

Generally you can’t switch to nuts, there isn’t enough axle protruding for that. If you’re dead set on nuts, you would need to replace the axle.

Also, just a note which may or may not apply to you. Many people don’t tighten their skewers enough. You should screw it down until you cannot tighten the skewer lever by hand. Then loosen it just enough so you can get the lever closed. If you are not getting it good and tight, it will keep slipping.

  2. Frame with dropouts, nuts + longer axle or chain tensioner bolts. The last one being probably the best option for you

  3. They just need to be adjusted so that they close tighter. It has to be quite hard to fully close the lever. Use the “brand” test… when you’re closing the lever, it should take so much pressure that it leaves an imprint of the brand logo on your palm afterward.

Do you have chrome dropouts on your bike? If so you need to tighten the skewers ungodly tight and have good quality skewers.
