Just did a quick scroll of the sub and there is hardly any hi vis to be found. I’ve been on a few group rides and I’m always the brightest, hardly anyone else is wearing safety yellow or anything bright, mostly drab dark colours. Pretty much all of them have rear lights though. I have lights but dont like to rely on them to be visible. Most of the people I see with hi vis helmets and jackets appear to be over 50-60. To be fair most legit cycling brands have very very boring jersey designs but most offer at least a solid yellow and yellow helmets arent hard to come by. I tend to wear louder colors (like fluorescent pink – I don’t like yellow for some reason) when I am riding alone. With a group, I am more confident cars will see the 20 flashing tail lights. But riding is dangerous, as recent events show, so don’t let fashion effect what you think is safest.
I’m like you, I must wear hi-vis gear. I have a Varia so I’m not blind while driving on the road but I generally leave the house anywhere from 5-7am in the morning when it can still be dark. If bright colors are your style, you should check out the brand Eliel, which sells bright faded colors. You shouldn’t worry about how others perceive you, you do you.
