I have a question more out of curiosity. So I just bought a new bike and went to put on new rotors but unlike any of my previous bikes the rotors are centerlock on my new bike. However, they used 2 different types of lock rings. One takes a cassette tool bit while the other used a BBT-9 bottom bracket tool and I’m wondering if there’s any specific reason they would have used two different locking mechanisms?
Thankfully I had both tools lol

Yeah, the first one with the splines on the inside are based on a cassette locking. Axles were all (or at least mostly) narrow quick release axles. Then when thru axles came along, the centrelock opening had to be wider to accommodate the wider axles, so they moved to the external splines that are the same as hollowtech II bottom bracket splines
