It’s a side loading truck. The workers will be in and out of the bike lane while they unload bottles.

While it’s great they didn’t park in the bike lane, we can’t assume that’s the only (or even the primary) reason behind this configuration.

In addition, this also creates some blocked lines of sight, especially for pedestrians walking around the truck – and a double door zone. Yes, it’s better than parking in the bike lane, but I’d be inclined to pass the whole shebang on the left myself.

I know it’s the unpopular opinion here, but I’d much rather a delivery truck park such that they block an unprotected bike lane such as this. The reason why? Because it’s going to be a lot more unsafe to bike in between the truck, which by its presence means people will be walking in the lane with vision obstructed, than it is to take the half lane on the left and pass. You’ll be safe from cars since they’ll have to shift lanes entirely to pass anyway.

Of course protected lanes are the best, but defensive cycling means I’m loath to put myself in the narrow space seen on the right of the truck.
