I’ve recently bought a home trainer second hand, as the original owner had an 11 speed bike on it I had to get the cassette changed to a 9 speed. I got my lbs to do that for me.
Now that I’ve started using the trainer I feel like the noise that it makes while riding is quite loud, I can also somewhat make out notches while pedaling which gets more noticable when it makes the wierd sounds in the video.
Does this happen because of the new cassette with the old chain combination or is it a different problem?
I have been using this chain while commuting about 60km a week with an occasional longer ride on top for 10 months now and it is looking quite rusty.
If I do have to replace (or if it’s advised to do so) the chain do I have to do some sort of extra cleaning before installing it with the type of lube/wax I’m using?
Now that we’re on the topic of cleaning do you have any tips on how to remove the orange smudges on my derailleur, chainstay and crankarm.

Tldr: drivetrain makes funny noises now that a new cassette is installed on trainer. Is the chain done for?

The chain is dryer then the sand in the Sahara, thats why you can hear all the noise, its doing its best to go up and down….change the chain and install a new one..oil it all up and should work perfectly, for cleaning everything else just use a sponge with water and dry it with a clean cloth..
Why is there a rusty chain on there to begin with? I’ve never even seen someone try to use a chain like that on their indoor trainer, it’s obviously trash and in need of replacement.

Chain is toast. If you commute in all weather you need to regularly lube and clean the chain. like at least once a week.

Get a new chain and a chain wear checker, you probably need new chainrings and cassette on your bike wheel. That new cassette will be worn pretty quick if you use it like that

I recommend a wet line for indoors. I’m a heavy sweater and after a good session I always wipe/lube/wipe. I had used a dry lube before and even with that same method I ended up with a rusty chain. Also, take the bike off and clean it regularly!

Replace the chain immediately and make sure the gears are properly indexed. Learn how to lube your chain so this doesn’t happen again. Might want to check the chainrings as well, I’m guessing they are toast.
Generally, if you replace the cassette, you should replace the chain. A cassette can usually last through a couple chains, unless you choose not to care for it like to have in the past.
