With patience or a good used gear shop around easily under $1,000. With new “vintage style” components probably twice that.

Generally this kind of r/xbiking build is done because the person has a well-stocked parts bin that they’ve accumulated over the years. I’ve built mine up from take-offs of bikes I’ve upgraded. With this, you tend to only have to buy tires, cables, pads, etc.
If looking to build something like this from scratch, it can easily cost thousands of dollars.

Tires, racks, and fenders cost more than the used bike off Craigslist.
I bought a 1993 Rockhopper Sport to do this exact thing, bike was $70 and was so original it had the original tires and grips still.
$100 in tires
$85 for racks
$75 for fenders
Chain, cables, pads, etc.
Meanwhile, I love the thing for commuting and errands.

I’ve built many of those, but I fix all my shit myself. Never spent more than 300$. If you’d like to build it in a shop then it’ll cost much more

I put a center mount kickstand on my 950 Singletrack. I like those fenders. I already have a rack. So maybe in my case $100 for two decent fenders?

If you’re spending money on a 1x conversion, at least switch to v brakes!
