Okay guys hi welcome to um this one take um bike tips um this one’s a difficult one to describe actually but I’m going to give it my best shot so this is a tip that doesn’t actually involve any part of a bicycle it’s more the mechanic mechanic’s approach to the bicycle so we
Get people that have worked for us who look at a bike that’s come in that either needs building or repairing and they’re straight in with the tools and go right this bit’s broken let’s just dive into this and I need to fix this and I need to fix that and that
Scatter gun approach can actually be very unhelpful the reason being is because I you can miss stuff and B you’re diving in with tools and you don’t know if that’s the problem so what we’ve always told our staff members and it’s really really really basic really simple way of
Doing things but I think you might find that actually it’s quite useful so we have a say in here which is Eyes First hands second tools last and by that what I mean is is actually before you start doing anything before you pick up anything
Have a good look at the bike right so this one for instance I don’t you don’t need um a degree in engineering to know that this brake lever is broken so that’s my so in my head I’m thinking right broken brake lever gear lever probably doesn’t work Rusty handlebars blah blah blah blah
Blah but already has got a a flat tire at the front got a flat on the back um that doesn’t look particularly healthy that little bracket at the back but by by looking and using my eyes I haven’t I haven’t done any damage to it before
I’ve even started this bike is now sort of been assessed the second thing I do once I’ve assessed the whole bike is then I use my hands so I look at this and go yeah snapped right that leave is snapped so I’m going to have to replace that so I’ll go and have
A look for that I haven’t picked a tool up yet I check a tire flat so the first thing I’ll do there when I get the tools out is I’ll pump the tire up see whether the inter tube’s any good see whether the tire’s any good same at the back here
So I’m using my hands to judge see how that moves that’s not great which means there’s play in the bottom bracket so now I can now start doing this with a strategy and that’s the trick is to have a strategy so always try and remember Eyes First hands second tools
Last hopefully that will help you with your home mechanics or the side of the road eyes first hand second tools Last
