I just got my daughter a tag along bike, arrived today and I fitted the handle bars and seat. On our test ride it was making a metallic clanking sound, so we went home and had a look. The rear cog isn’t on straight and wobbles when the wheel turns and there’s quite a lot of friction which makes turning the pedals a bit stiff and stops the free wheeling motion quickly.
Is this something I can easily sort out? Should I send it back under warranty?

You could always dismantle, reassemble and tighten everything that is loose. Or you could just send it back as if it ships in that condition with such obvious flaws, then there are probably quite a lot of other poorly assembled things in it also. (My advice would be: send it back, that looks like a bunch of headaches waiting to happen – lets hear if there are many contradictory opinions 😀 )
This could be two reasons.
One: freewheel thread is made very much non coaxial with rest of freewhell
Two: freewheel was cross threaded to hub thread. Probably damaging hub threads.
No matter the reason it changes chain tension constatntly while you rotate pedals thus making lots of friction.
