I’m thinking of buying new cranks but I’ll be really honest, I don’t need them.
I’m a much older rider. I’m really not ambitious with my riding now due to slower reaction times / reflexes, less strength, and injuries being a lot harder and longer to recover from.
Each Spring when the weather turns good I get back out there and need to discover what I going to be able to do, what I am able to relearn, and what I am still confident about doing (or not).
This has resulted in fairly simple park riding (just getting air without getting technical) and very basic street stuff.
What I have enjoyed though is frame painting and bike building.
This year I wont be building any more. I have two good BMX and I’m just sticking with those.
One is an Alex Kennedy signature frame with Cult Sect forks. I am happy with the build and the parts I chose for it.
I did, however, go budget on the cranks with Rant Bangin’ 8s @ 19mm spindle.
They were a bit *cranky* at first, coming loose etc, but eventually I got them to behave and for the short amount of time I rode them last summer, they were fine.
But now, it’s bugging me that I like the entire bike but have 8 spline, obviously budget cranks… with pinch bolts.
Purely for the aesthetics really, I’m thinking of switching to Cult 22mm Hawk V2 Cranks, just so I feel like the bike is not let down by the budget (barely used yet) Rants.
BB + Cranks is a fair amount of money for a mild rider who doesn’t actually need new cranks though.
What are any significant advantages and disadvantages to going 22mm?
Help me decide whether or not to spuff circa 250 nuggets on parts I really don’t need.

Swings and roundabouts! For most riders myself included, 19mm is still perfectly useable, although preferably a 48 spline type. 22mm and obviously 24mm are stronger, but noticeably stiffer which isn’t a bad thing. 22mm have been around forever, so we’ll proven. 24mm is newer but actually has had good feedback even though realistically no one was snapping 22mm crank axles in the regular! As always give me a message, I’ve got some nice wtp legacy cranks on offer right now that’ll go nicely and won’t break the bank. Obviously other cranks are also available
