Hi all,

I know this topic has been discussed at some length but I couldn’t get a good answer on this. I have a new carbon bike that I want to take care of, but I’m not sure how to correctly mount it in a clamp stand.

If I clamp the seat post (attached example picture) do I need to allow it to freely pivot so that it reliefs pressure on the post?

This often means the bike is at an awkward down angle and makes it annoying to work on. But if I don’t allow it to pivot and have the bike level, it seems this is putting some shear pressure on the post in a twisting action.

  1. That is the preferred way. 6Nm is the general torque clamp so if you go snug on the clamp you should be good. There is no need to allow it to pivot.

    [Park tool](https://youtu.be/ix_e6LWvap0?t=253) has a good discussion on this related to dropper posts, but the numbers don’t change for any other type of post as well. The TLDR of the video is that your seat post clamp is applying orders of magnitude more force than the workstand clamp does, and the force applied by a 30lb full sus bike on teh post is 30nm. Clamp to the post and don’t worry about it.

  3. Yep. Unless you want to use one of those Silca Hirobel frame clamps (handy if you’re building a carbon bike).
