As air pressure is so critical for fat biking in snow, I’ve been a bit frustrated by my existing bike pump and gauges. All of my issues are resolved by these two items. The Lezyne Tech Drive HV and the SKS Airchecker are great bits for fat biking. Here’s why:
Lezyne Tech Drive HV (High Volume)
1. The Lezyne Tech Drive HV has a hose (normally hidden in the pump) that stays flexible in cold weather and prevents damage to the Presta valve while pumping. It works for both Presta and Schraeder, depending on which end of the hose is attached to the pump. Retained rubber caps are used at both ends to protect threads.
2. The Presta valve connection screws onto the valve for a positive connection that stays solid as you pump! Same thing with the Schrader valve connection. There is no need to hold the hose on to the valve, which prevents damaging the valve or breaking a tubeless valve seal as you pump. The hose includes a pressure bleed button so you can release pressure before unscrewing the hose. This keeps the valve from unscrewing.
3. Volume is decent too. It took 50 pumps (less than 60 seconds) to air up a 27.5×4.5 tire from 3.8 psi, to 6.3 psi. Outside temps were -5C.
4. The pump is constructed using CNC aluminum, weighs 132 grams, and fits on the bike nicely via the included frame mount. The frame mount is designed to grab the pump body, and also restricts the head from moving. The mount includes a secondary velcro strap so the pump is not lost inadvertently when riding. The pump is designed to that water from splashing etc. would not enter the pump when frame mounted.
5. The pump is easy to pull apart for servicing.
SKS Airchecker
1. Very accurate at low pressures.
2. Presses directly onto Presta valve and beeps to indicate stable pressure reading. No adapters required! The rotating head has a seperate port for Schraeder valves
3. Head rotates for easier use/reading without clocking the wheel valve.
4. Has a bleed mode that allows you to bleed air while monitoring pressure so you can dial things in very accurately and quickly.
