New Maker’s Video about my design process and weaving practice at Cassandra Sabo Designs!

I have been weaving for about 15 years and have enjoyed the journey from student weaver to creative practitioner. It hasn’t always been a straightforward journey but one where I have explored different ways of approaching my work and developed new skills to push the boundaries of conventional textiles.

I now embrace the broader textile arts to inform my practice, taking ideas and techniques to incorporate into my designs for a contemporary twist. I have also found ways to use my waste fibres from my designs to create new materials or products, a more sustainable approach to my work.

If you are interested to learn more about my design work, head over to my website: https://www.cassandrasabo.co.uk to see my current collection or past work where you can purchase or commission something special.

However if you are visiting this channel to learn more about weaving, then you might start with our Weaving Basics series of videos, including: How to Set up a Warp on a Frame Loom: https://youtu.be/lWTFibYShsQ

Hi I’m Cassandra Smith and I’m a textile designer and handw Weaver my business brand is Cassandra Sabo designs and I design interior products and work often with private clients and uh design professionals I’m based here in Oxford uh right by the canal it’s a really beautiful spot to have a studio I think

I was always meant to be a weaver um I originally studied Engineering in Canada as a young woman but it didn’t really give me a creative Outlet so when I found uh textiles as a degree it was uh it seemed to be the right fit for me because it uh required lots of

Different technical knowledge and a lot of problem solving and and of course I had that creative Outlet finally I still remember at University when I took a cone of yarn and set up my loom and then created a fabric um it my mind was blown

It was the first time I was ever able to create something from nothing Weaving is a really meditative process for me I love the repetitive nature of setting up a warp and uh weaving repeated lines of uh textiles because it really gives me a sense of calm and meditation yarn blending uses color theory to combine yarn colors and qualities to achieve a color that has

Depth and interest from different Vantage points I use this process in my yarn and fiber prep always collecting from the highest quality of materials many of the processes I use are slow and deliberate but I really love the uniqueness it brings to my finished Pieces however working with unconventional processes and materials means that my work cannot be mass-produced which is something I’m incredibly proud of as a designer I really try and close my own sustainability cycle by repurposing um old bits of fabric into new products or H spinning Yarns and fibers from my own

Waste i h spin the waste fibers into new Yarns so lavender sachets with leftover fabric or weave unused strips into new designs very little goes to waste experimentation and learning are key to my design process I try to learn techniques or crafts that I feel can be incorporated into my designs that will

Enrich the outcome by creating something unexpected collaborating with clients is something that always pushes me creatively I love problem solving and pushing the boundaries of conventional weaving to come up with something really unusual and unexpected every woven fabric I design is transformed into a product in the studio by hand ensuring

That only the highest quality products leave the studio every woven product that I create is the culmination of many years of learning experimenting and weaving which I hope will continue for years to come
