      neat, but likely way too expensive to be feasible for a long while on bikes like ours. plus, I wonder how exposure to loads of dirt would impact wear or even the ability to pedal.

      meanwhile, I’m itching closer and closer to using singlespeeds for my ‘packing trips – I’m not overwhelmed by derailleur problems or anything (use friction on my geared bike) but simplicity is a pretty nice sell.

      I’ve seen this on motorcycles. It produces a less responsive and sluggish response from power and make the bike feel mushy and squirmy under your butt. Not detrimentally so, but noticeably enough that I’ve always preferred chain driven gearing.

      The shaft that is. Never seen a cassette like that. Looks very difficult to repair if broken.

      Yeah this technology isn’t anything new it’s just mounted to carbon fiber. If you want to get nerdy look at how front derailleurs were designed.

      Literally unrideable. This is a nonfunctional bike shaped sculpture that was shown in 2018. By 2021, Ceramicspeed still hadn’t figured out how to make it actually shift on a real bike, and dropped the project. Its inventor managed to crowdfund further development funds, but hasn’t produced a rideable prototype yet.

      If it did work, the niche market this is for is tri/track bikes, not bikepacking. If you want to go 3% faster, just take your bags off and ride on the road.

      Chains are pretty cheap & it’s easy to include a new chain with your stuff (vacuum seal if possible to avoid any chance of it corroding or getting wet before you need it)

      If you are having particular problems with a 10/11/12 speed chain wearing out quickly, then a decent quality 9speed drive train with a 9 speed chain might prove to be a more durable option
