Where I’m going to unpack um the content for 2024 uh grad tourism I’m also going to touch um in detail a topic called Global events of um International significance that’s actually topic number one for grade 12 uh tourism so um May you just um follow as I unpack U the full details
So the main topic is um Global events of international significance Global events of international significance that will be the uh main topic or topic number one so under that topic there are some keywords which I would want um you to um keep in mind we are going to have some
Keywords which I would want you to have at the back of your um Minds so the first keyword is actually Global events this word will be explained subsequently or in detail Global events taken from the word International Global simply refers to what to International then the second key word
Um appears on the third bullet it is actually international relations we going to make use of that word as well in our discussion then there’s also another word summit and also facilities we will also come across it and we also unpack it as we um proceed with this
Discussion then we also have another word um known as The W Nation you also come across words such as invest these are key key words which you need to have at the at the back of your mind then in the next bullet we also talk about
Delegates um then we also have the term upgrade you come across it as well then participants and potential investors are other words which you come across then moving on Spectators and media exposure will also be discussed um as we uh proceed with this uh lesson then the
Imps and also the multiply effect these are words which will talk when you talk about the impact of global um events we’ll discuss them in detail now moving on to the next part we are moving on to the next part I’m going to POS the key question what
Is a global event so we need a working definition of the term Global event so in short a global event it is an organized event that is planned it is an organized event that is planned and prepared over a long period of time it is planned for and it is also
Uh prepared for over a long period um of time so I’m going to highlight the key terms there so the first uh thing is that it is organized it is an organized event we need to highlight that it is an organized event which is planned then the second keyword is planned there’s a
Lot of planning which involves Global events um you don’t just wake up and was and um a global event there’s so much organization there’s all so much uh planning to be done then as the planning will be taking place this happens over a long period of time when a country needs
To host a global event it actually takes place over a long period of time all right so the second uh sentence it actually explains maybe perhaps are the impact um of global events so it reads countries around the world wor events that will attract what our tourists so
We also need to highlight that uh Global events they attract um several tourists it can be thousands of tourists or it can even be uh millions of tourists so recapping on it the definition of the global event it is an organized event which is plan and prepared for over a long period of
Time countries around the world host events that to attract what um uh tourist so if you look at um this definition you might come up with um your own suggestion of uh these um events you might come up with examples of these events but I’ll unpick um
Examples of this event in the next um slide so when this events are hosted well they become an opportunity for the local economy and Global influence to develop so Global events when they are hosted only when they are hosted well when a Country Host them well they become an opportunity for the
Local economy they actually boost the local economy in several ways it can boost the local economy through job creation new jobs can be uh created um then apart from that it can actually um uh boost the local e economy through um uh the inflow of foreign currency so I’m
Going to just write briefly how it can boost the local economy so it can be throughout job creation or it can be through um it can be through uh job creation or it can be through um through um foreign currency inflows so Global event um in the next bullet
Global events are sporting events or Summits they can either be these two so they can either be a sporting event they can either be a sporting event or they can also be a summit so we have two this means that we have two types of um Global events the first
Category we have sporting events which I would unpack subsequently then we also have what we call Summits so when it comes to sporting events we are talking about your events such as the FIFA World Cup um your events such as the Olympics which I will discuss in detail in the
Subsequent uh lesson then when you talk about summits I will also unpack Summits separately we are talking about U meetings which take place among um amongst or which involve delegates from different uh countries so I will later um deal with that in detail so but for
Now the main um purpose of this SL of this first light is to have a working definition of the term Global event so a global event it is a planned event which is um organized over a long period of time it attracts tourists then if it is
Hosted well it also boost the what the local economy now I’m moving on to the next um slides next slide is going to deal with um the um some terms or some uh terminology so the first term which we need to know is that the country which
Is hosting the global event is known as the host nation the country which host the global um the global event is known as the host nation so I’m going to highlight um the term host nation it’s a very very important term which we will use extensively in our
Discussion so the country which host is known as the wor Nation so in similar terms we can actually say that the place where the uh event is taking place is known as either the wor Nation or it can also be known as the what as the wor City then um it might be
Also um important for me to uh just give you an example of um a wor Nation it will be also important to give an example of a wor Nation for example in the World Cup which took place in Qatar we have um Qatar is the wor um Nation for example we can
Actually say katam katam is an example of wor Nation for the FIFA World Cup then I can also give you um the Tokyo Olympic Games these are examples of host um countries we also have um Tokyo as an example then moving on we are going over to the
Second bullet so every country that participates is represented by either delegates so when a country participates in a global event it is represented by uh it can be represented by delegate by delegates or it can be represented by participants so I’m going to distinguish between these two I’m going to make a
Distinction between these two uh delegates and uh participants so when you talk about delegates we are talking about Representatives these are the people who represent a particular country at the global event these are representative then we also have participants participants can be competitors the people who actually take
Uh part in the event are known as particip ipants so I’m also going to highlight this then we also people we also have people who watch the event these are known as Spectators I think I can also give also an example of what of the FIFA World Cup those people who
Watch the football matches are known as The Spectators or you can call them fans but for the purpose of this discussion let’s refer to them as Spectators now moving on to the next bullet uh often the country hosting the global event gets a lot of media coverage so so much media coverage is
Given to the country which will be hosting uh the global event so media coverage can become in the form of Television broadcasting you find that most um Global events or if not all of them they are actually broadcast on television on various television channels then you find information about
Them on the Internet you also find them on social media pages and in addition to that you can also find them in newspapers so for a global event to be called a global event it must have so much media coverage which can be through television broadcasting radio broadcasting internet broadcasting or
Even newspapers or any other um forms of um media now moving on to the next uh slides we now have examples of our Global sporting events so specifically we are starting with sporting events so I need to highlight the key word then sporting for the purpose of this um um
The for the next few slides we will be focusing mainly on sporting events so I am going to unpack examples of uh Global sporting events so the first uh Global sporting event is known as the FIFA World Cup which will be explained um in detail so the FIFA World Cup it is an
Important Global event remember it attracts so much media coverages when the FIFA World Cup is taking place most broadcasting houses such as Sac BBC Sky Sports will be broadcasting uh soccer matches live or even delayed so that’s why we consider the FIFA World Cup to be a global sporting event in addition to
That it also attracts millions of Spectators who visit the host country to host uh to watch the live matches unfold um unfolding there then um moving on there now we have an explanation of the FIFA World Cup this is actually the largest and most viewed U football event
So out of all football events this is the largest meaning that there are more Spectators the last Edition it was it actually had 32 comp um 32 uh different countries participating in the events then it is also the most viewed International Football event I think you
Can agree with me that uh football is the most popular uh sport um in the world so it being the most popular uh sport event the FIFA World Cup also hosts the most um viewed International Football event so there’s no other football event which is uh viewed much
More than the FIFA World Cup then after highlighting this it is also important to highlight how often this event is held so this event is held after every four years so it is held every fourth year so it means that the last Edition was held in Qatar in 2022
So the next Edition we anticipate that it is going to be held in uh the United States of America in Canada and also in in Mexico in 2026 so it is an event which is held after every 4 years then moving on to uh the next point it um
Also stresses what I was explaining before the last tournament was held in katar in 2022 so if we add four more years to Qatar uh to to Qatar 2022 you’ll find that we would have Mexico and United States of America together with Canada hosting the event in
2026 so that is how it works it is held after every uh four years it is held after every four years so in the case of the next Edition it will be held in Qatar in in sorry in Mexico in 20 uh 22 it will be held in Mexico in
2020 um 2026 rather all right now moving on to the next Point moving on to the next Point um we do have a logo it is important I would want to stress this name this is the logo of the FIFA World Cup held in Russia that was in 2018 it was held in
Russia then this was the logo or you can call it an emblem because sometimes in the examination they can bring um this emblem then they can ask you to identify the global event associated with this particular so this is the emblem of the Russia um 2018 fif World Cup in addition to that
You find that the one which followed after them is represented by the image or by the emblem on your right IDE so these are the two emblems you should it is important that um you put them at the back of your mind so that you can
Remember them um when they come um in an assessment or in an examination so having said about the FIFA World Cup let me unpick yet another Global sporting event on the next uh slide so the next Global sporting event is known as the toour difference so from
The name itself you can take a moment and pause and try to figure out where does it take place I think um just from the name itself you can actually figure out that it takes place in France but as how we explain subsequently there is more um to this event than France only
So even though it is named as the to France uh there’s more to this event much more than uh France being the host itself so it brings us um to uh an explanation of this um of this event so I would want to emphasize that um this
Event is an annual bicycle rest so it’s important for us to highlight the term annual it is an annual bicycle race it’s actually takes place annually bicycle race so it’s a cycling race uh people will be racing on uh bicycles it is an annual cycling race which is held
Primarily in France so France is the major host of this particular event so it’s held primarily in France but while also uh occasionally making passes through the neighboring what uh countries so not only does it take place in France but the cycling race itself or the cycling route which the cyclist
Follow it actually takes them into neighboring countries such as Belgium such as um Germany then we also have Switzerland which are neighboring countries to France so it is an annual bicycle rest which means that it takes place on a year toe basic after every year it takes place in France and the
Race also passes through neighboring countries now here is the emblem of the to France as you can see you can see the text written to France uh which appears there then you can also see that that’s the emblem it’s a registered trademark in addition to that I think you can see
The image which represents a cyclist who is actually participating in the tour to so you once you come across this type of an image in the examination it has something to do with the ter def France which is an annual cycling events now it brings us to the next um emblem again so
You can see the similarity between the two emblems the image of um the cyclist also appears on the second emblem now let’s move on to um the global sporting event number three which would appear in the next uh slide so so the next um Global sporting event is
Known as the comate marathon one thing which I like about the comate marathon this is actually a global event which takes place every year in South Africa it takes place every year in South Africa except for the years when we were under covid-19 but it has been taking
Place over the years it is a long old tradition which takes place in South Africa so I’m going to unpe what exactly um it consist of so the first thing which I would want to bring to your attention is that it is internationally recognized which makes
It a global W event it is an internationally recognized annual it takes place annually I would highlight the term or the word annual then in addition to that it is an annual 89 kilm outra Marathon it is a a marathon which is run over a distance of 89 kilomet it
Takes place over a distance of 89 kilm then we would ask our question where does it take place so this event involves two cities in South Africa so the first city is Deon so I’m going to highlight the city of Deon then the next city is Peter Marburg so it takes place
Between the two cities in CET and which are Deon and Peter Maris these are the two cities which Host this event so I want also to emphasize something the direction of the race it alternates every year between the two cities uh for example if this year they
Run between Deon and peteris it means the following year they would do what is called the um the U which is from Deon to Peter Maris so it alternates one year is From Deon to Peter Maris then the other year is from Peter Maris to Deon
So this is a very very um um important um Marathon it attracts thousands of um uh participants that it also attracts thousands of Spectators who will be looking at various competitors then so it’s a serious event which is not to be taken lightly then um moving on to the
The next slide I’m moving on to the next slide where we discuss the next um uh we are still on the comrades Marathon which um here’s an emblem this is the emblem of the cor comrades Marathon which appears in the first um in the first um in the first um image then in
Addition to that I think you can see them um you can also see the participants who are taking part in the event so it attracts thousands and thousands of um participants and not only participants it also attracts uh thousands and thousands of Spectators who will be sharing on the uh runners or the
Athletes so those are the participants of the uh comrades Marathon then also on the left hand side you can actually see one of the participants who is getting assistance uh perhaps um he fell down during the rest uh so he’s getting assistance from one of the assistants
There then um the image below it shows us the a graph which um shows um the altitude and also the distance in what in kilometers uh that is the graph there now moving on to the next um slide we do have another event which is also of
World importance which is known as the Olympic Games when it comes to the Olympic Games I’m going to give you an explanation there so the Olympic games are actually any International I’m going to highlight the term International it means they consist of various countries various countries send their teams they send
Them participants to those what uh to that event then another important thing is that it is a multi sport event multi sport event um we are trying to say that this event does not only consist of one sporting discipline like the FIFA World Cup but it is made up of um different
Sporting disciplines such as Athletics we also have netball football rugby we also have swimming diving ballet dancing we also have karat Judo and many other events so it is a Mount or it is a MTI sporting event subdivided into the summer and winter Olympic um events as well as the para
Olympic and the Youth Olympic editions but for the purpose of this syllabus for grade 12 we mainly focus on the summer and winter Olympics we mainly focus on those two all right now moving on to the next uh bullet we need to emphasize that these games are held every four years
After every four years that’s when um the Olympic games are held then adding on to that we do have um the famous five rings which and the famous logo of the Olympic Games so when you come across uh these multicolor drinks we do have blue we do have um yellow black green and
Awesome we do have a little bit of red or pink uh there so these Rings they actually represent the Olympic uh games that is the official logo of the Olympic Games so they are help H every four years but um they alternate they are not held in one city they City changes
Always the other time they were held in Tokyo then this time they’re going to move to Paris which is in France in the year 2024 so it brings us um to the next um Slide the previous Summer Olympics were held in uh Tokyo 2021 then the next Edition will be held
In Paris in 2024 so the wor countries are alternated they do these games they do not take place in a single country they are alternated from time to time after every five years then in addition to that um there’s an image which appears there which shows you the Tokyo Olympics which
Appears there this is the image of the Tokyo Olympics which I’m highlighting below the Tokyo Olympics which took place in 2021 yes the logo says uh 2020 but um I think you’re are aware of the fact that the world was under lockdown so instead of the event taking place in
2020 it was postponed to 202 uh1 now let’s move on to the next um side the next Edition will be Paris 2024 which is going to be this year will take place in Paris 2020 home then below we also have um the official logo or the official L
Emblem of uh the Olympic Games now moving on to the next slide we do have um a picture of um some of the examples of the global events we have discussed we do have um them uh silverware which is associated with um the wimon so it brings us to the
Next um global event which is called known as Wimbledon so what we have here on the first image these are the trophies which are one at the Wimbledon tennis tournament I will discuss it in detail subsequently then we also have the infrastructure of the tennis courts
Which are used for this event then in addition to that we can actually see the athletes in action taking part in the wimon then below we have a banner which reads the all England Lear Tennis Club then below we have the official emblem of the wimon tennis Championship it
Appears there below now moving uh downwards we have uh the title of our next Global event which is known as the wimon that is the title so what does it consist of it consist of it it’s actually a men’s and a women’s tennis Championship which takes place every
Year is what will be unpegged B below so this is a major tennis t tournament wased every year so in terms of the explanation it is a major tennis tournament it’s not just an ordinary one but it is one of the greatest Tenn tennis tournament whereby you would come
Across the world’s um greatest tennis players such as Novak jovik we also have um the likes of Roger federa the likes of Selena Williams the likes of um venos Williams and also other famous um uh players so where is it hosted it is hosted every year in wimon wimon is
Actually located in London this is a subb in London no wonder why they decided to call it the wimon tennis Championship so which is a seup of what of Lon it takes place every year we also need to highlight that it doesn’t take place after four years but each year
That’s where the event takes uh place so that is wimon which will be another example of the um uh which will be another which will be another example of a global sporting event now moving on to the next slide we do have an activity which um needs to be uh completed we do
Have an activity which needs to be completed so the key concept there we are just doing a recap Global event it is an event in which different countries take part and it is worldwide interest that is the definition of the term Global event it is an event which different countries um take
Part in and it is worldwide interest then on the right hand side on the third column we have been given examples of global events so example number one is the Olympic games these are an example of a global event then we also have the tour def France which is also an example
Of a global event then we also have the FIFA World Cup so we are doing a recap of this so that you can understand it uh better then we have the T summit though we haven’t discussed it in detail but I can take this opportunity to preempt it
So that I can touch a little bit on it so when you talk about Summits we we talking about meetings a summit the term Summit refers to meetings of heads of different governments so a head of a government can be a president or can be a prime minister so it is a meeting
Between presidents and also high ranking officials such as ministers ministers can be present at the summit to discuss the main purpose of their meeting is to discuss really important Global issues really important Global issues so examples of summits are listed on your right hand we have the G7 Summit
Which I’ll unpack um subsequently then we have the cop Summit which I’ll also explain subsequently then the next thing which I’m going to dwell on is the host nation the host nation can also be known as the host country this is the country in which the events take place this is the
Country in which the events take place they you have been given examples for example the FIFA World Cup took place in Qatar so Qatar can be identified as a worst country then we also have the likes of France France can also be categorized as a worst uh country for the upcoming um Olympic
Games then we also have the next term which is um delegates delegates we are talking about the people that represent the country at a summit or or at a global event these are the people the delegates are the people that represent a country at a summit so I’m going to highlight the
Term Summit also they are the people that represent a country at a summit or at a global event then in addition to that I’m also going to preempt participants participants are the people taking part we need to add the word part they are the people taking part in an event participants are the
People who actually take part in an event they are the people who take part in an event so the sports people if it is a sports event for example in the FIFA World Cup the players you like of Messi Ronaldo are known as the participants then their national teams are also participants
Then we also have the managers who are the team managers the coaches are also participants so so those ones are the people who will be taking part in an event they are known as participants so I am going to write examples there I’m going to write examples of participants uh right um
There I’m going to write examples participants for example um we can say National teams national team is an example of a participant then we also have players can also be participants players then we also have coaches or you can call them uh managers they are also participants then in
Addition to that you’ll find that um um delegates examples of delegates uh delegates this can be president of a country can be a delegate or a minister a minister can attend a summit so these are some of the examples so these are our um these are examples of um delegates
Participants I’ve listed them there now moving on to the the next U slide we would have an activity all right an activity but before we go to the activity we also need to continue with Spectators these are people who come from all over the world to watch the
Event so the missing word here I’m going to write it there it is actually to watch the people who come from all over the world to watch the events then examples of Spectators it can be soccer soccer fans socer fans uh we can also have rugby rugby fans people who come to
Witness an event are known as Spectators then in addition to that uh let’s move on to the next uh thing the next thing will be outra Marathon an outram marathon is a road the missing word there is a road race so I’m going to indicate the missing word there which
Is missing there it’s a road R longer than 42 kilomet for example the comrades marathon is considered comrades marathon is considered as an outra marathon it’s just more than a marathon it is longer than 42 um kilometers then International significance important to the international significant simply mean important to the war world to
Important uh to the war world the missing word there is war world then um International significance we can say that um examples of things which you have International significance we can also say um we can also say that the FIFA World Cup is of international significance World
Cup we have the FIFA World Cup we also have um things such as um the Olympic Games the Olympic games are also um of significance so now moving on um to the next thing annually annually simply means every year events which take place every we are talking about events which
Take place every every year which okay every year so the missing words there is here so examples of events which take place annually we have wimon wimo John then we have the comrades Marathon you also have the comrades Marathon it takes place annually then um we have the following acronym
Abbreviation acronym the Federation of international there a missing word then Association so the missing Association then it’s the word which is actually missing after International the Federation of International Football Association that is the missing word the missing word will be Football Association so I’m going to write it below football
Association so when it comes to the example this type of equation does not need any um example then now we go on to the next term a tournament is a series of contest between a number of competitors who compete so the missing word there is compete
So they actually compete for a prize so examples of tournaments I’m going to write examples of tournaments on the right hand side so for example Olympics that’s an example of a tournament then we also have um wimon tennis Championship is an example of a tournament then we also have FIFA World Cup World
Cup it’s also an example of an tournament now moveing on going forward uh to the next slide you’ll find that we also have um a written exercise this is a writing exercise you have 10 minutes to complete um to complete so this one we are going
To um for now we are going to be doing it um together so the first question it actually reads which country hosted the last FIFA World Cup so I’m going to provide uh the country which hosted the last FIFA World Cup which was held in
2020 um two the last FIFA World Cup was hosted in 2022 so the country which hosted is known as Qatar then I can also emphasize which year it happened in 2022 2022 so that was the last country which hosted uh the FIFA World Cup then give the names of at least 10 countries
Which participated in this event so you know very well that in Qatar there were more than around 32 countries so out of those 32 countries I’m going to list the countries which um participated so in this case I’m going to list them uh below them I’m going to list them
Below the countries which participated in um the event all right so the first country I’ll start with um the winner of this um World Cup it was Argentina then we also have um France is the runner up then we also had another country called Morocco from Africa then we also had another country
Called Croatia also had another country called Portugal Australia did participate um in the event then Qatar itself is the wor Saudi Arabia also they also participated in the event then we also had Sagal yes so we can count the number of countries then so the first one 1 2 3 4
5 6 7 8 9 so we are also running short of another one which I write above which is um England England also participated um in the event so those are the countries which are participated now moving on to the next um question what does global mean
All right the meaning of global is can be simplified AS Global simply means worldwide worldwide when something is global is actually worldwide then number five name any Global sporting event other than the FIFA World Cup that took place in the previous year or that will be hosted
This year all right so this one the question requires us to name another event so obviously you can write the Olympic Games and right the Olympic games um which will be hosted in to be hosted the Olympic games are to be hosted by uh Paris that is actually France
Well you can say France that is the worst nation in 2024 in 2024 then we have another example is a second one comrades Marathon Marathon in South Africa in South Africa then um the next question reads name two other events other than sporting events that can be
Described as um AS Global events so this question we haven’t discussed other Summits but um remember when I mentioned there is a summit which is known as the cop 28 then there’s also the G7 Summit then there’s also another one known as the bricks Summit I think I’ll explain these
Ones uh in subsequent um lessons the G7 Summit the CP 28 and the bricks these are non-sporting events which can also be described as what AS Global events because they have an international audience they also attract International media coverage and they also bring in quite a number of tourists so uh before
We move on to the next slide uh why will the world Summit on global Waring uh be described as a global event simply because the world Summit can be described as a global event because it attracts the event attracts participants worldwide participants worldwide participants and media coverage it attracts
Um several participants and media media coverage that is why it does the way it does now moving on to the next question or the next um activity there is question it’s a typical past examination paper um so we uh would want to practice as many as possible of these um last examination
Papers so 1.1.7 says the global event that took place in Rio deiro in 2016 is due to take place in so it first took place in R diso and I think mainly by looking at this image you can see these five rings whenever you see these five
Rings you can actually see that um this is um the Olympic Games it is known as the Olympic games like I explained before Olympic games are held after each and every four years so if we take 2016 then uh 2016 plus 4 years I’m going to demonstrate them
2016 they took place in 2016 then I say um you add four years the Olympic Games take place after every four years why are we saying the Olympic Games the Rings which are here they show us these are actually the what the Olympic Games
So 6 + 4 it gives us um zero carry 10 carry one then 1 + 1 that’s actually two so it means the next Edition will be held in 2020 so I’m going to highlight um the correct answer the correct answer is 20 20 that is the correct answer for
That um activity or for that question now moving on to the next uh question or the next um uh the next um um major thing but before I move on to the next major thing the previous lesson you um just uh need to bear in mind uh the different uh
Global sporting events so I’m going to briefly recap them we do have the Olympic Games we do have comrades Marathon we also have um wimon we also you have um the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup now moving on to the next we now have examples of other
Global events there are some Global events which are not sporting events which I would unfold all right we now have um the G8 Summit remember I said the summit it’s a meeting involves involving government leaders involving uh representatives of government from different countries so we now have the G8 Summit which is now
Known as the G7 what Summit so since 1998 the group of eight uh used to consist of France uh USA Russia and Germany um Italy and Canada so that they were known as the group of eight which means that these are the group of eight most economically
Developed what countries they used to be known as the G8 but in 2014 the Russian Federation was ejected from G8 political Forum following the Russian annexation of cremia so now it is known the term which you find is the group of what of uh seven Russia has been uh ejected is
No longer part of the G8 so the only ones which we talk about is France USA Germany Italy and Canada they are known as the uh G7 so Russia is now totally out of this Arrangement so I’m going to um indicate that Russia is no longer part of um this
Arrangement so that is the G7 G7 let me indicate the that Russia is no longer part of um the arrangement so the G7 consist of France USA UK Germany Italy and Canada that is known as then G7 so leaders from these countries they meet on a regular basis regular simply means frequently from
Time to time they meet uh to discuss issues of macroeconomic management they discuss issues about their economies um they also talk about International Trade they also talk about terrorism and relations with developing what countries so those are the major things which they discuss they talk about macroeconomic Management International Trade they also
Talk about terrorism relations with um other developing uh countries then um let me move on to the next um slide on the next slide it actually shows you the members of um The Group of Seven with do you have the United States of America represented by
The Stars and Stripes um flag then we also have Japan represented by each flag there then you can see the flag of um Japan then you see Germany France Italy the UK so this group of countries is known as the group of seven so from time
To time they meet together as they meet together they discuss issues affecting their economies they also discuss um issues affecting um political relations or international relations so they send different delegates to uh attend these meetings so these delegates they come in thousands no wonder why the G7 Summit is
Referred to as a global event now moving on to the next um slide we also have um another um Global event which is known as the conference of the parties which can be abbreviated as cop uh um basically this is a United Nations climate change conference so it is a
Meeting um which is actually organized by the United Nations whereby members discuss the following um um the following uh items so the conference of parties that is the full meaning of what of the abbreviation cop uh the conference of parties to the Kyoto Protocol meet every year to assess
Progress in dealing with climate change so the main reason why the meet is actually to discuss the issue of climate change or you can also say the issue of global warming that is the main reason why they meet so the Kyoto Protocol is an agreement that puts Targets in place
For the industrialized countries and the European uh Community to reduce uh Greenhouse emissions so the purpose of this meeting is to discuss on how the can reduce greenhouse gas emissions that is the main purpose of this particular meeting or this particular Summit which is known as the cop or the cop uh
Conference then in addition to that um I’m also going to give you the dates where the cop Summit um took place we have um cop 27 it was held in Egypt uh that is um in um 2022 then cop 28 was held in the United Arab Emirates in
2023 so it is an event which takes place annually it takes place after each and every year so that is the second um example of a global event which is not a sporting event now moving on to the next um slide we also have the emblem or the
Official logo of the cop 28 United Arab emir Emirates um Summit so the slogan was actually unite act and deliver like I said uh this was an event whereby they were discussing about ways in which they can respond to climate change and also ways in which they can address the
Issues of uh global warming so you must also put uh in mind that particular logo or that particular emblem moving on to the next uh slide um we will be um unpicking the impact of um Global event so the issue of um unpacking the impact of global
Events we’ll be looking at the following things we’ll be looking at possible positive impacts so when we assess the impact of something it’s either is positive or it’s negative so we’ll be unpicking the possible positive impact in addition to that we will also be um and picking the negative so the impact
Of global events the first impact is that it results in Improvement of infrastructure what do you mean by Improvement of infrastructure whenever a country was a global event it simply means that they um actually buil new infrastructure so that it can support or it can accommodate the event so I’m going to
Give examples of infrastructure which can be built uh to to um uh when a country is hosting a global event I’ll write it on the Right End s I’ll write a few examples of the infrastructure which can be built so the infrastructure ranges from Bridges they actually range from
Bridges for example in South Africa when South Africa hosted at the FIFA World Cup you can um remember well that the Nelson Mandela Bridge was reconstructed or it was renovated then we have H stadiums stadiums can also be renovated or new stadiums can be what can be built
Katar built quite a number of new stadiums for the 2022 FIFA World Cup then roads can also be um improved or they can uh be constructed then in addition to that we can also have um an improvement of hospitals to CER for uh Medical emergencies then we can also have um the
Improvement of Transport Transportation itself like in the case of South Africa there are new forms of Transport like the how train which were introduced after the hosting of the 2010 FIFA World Cup then we can also have um things such as hotels hotels themselves provide accommodation for the tourist which um
Would um flood the host country when country is hosting a global event then another Advantage is job creation for local people usually when an event is hosted uh local people get um jobs in the construction industry they get uh jobs in construction some get jobs in um uh in the hotel or accommodation
Industry like they become waiters or they can become housekeepers some get jobs in what in transportation in transporting the tourist so job opportunities are also created by the hting of global um events uh still under job creation I would also emphasize I want to emphasize that you should bear
In mind that most of these jobs might be temporary jobs simply because remember Global events they take place within a short period of time for example the FIFA World Cup only takes place within um a month within 30 days so some of the jobs might be
Temporary then moving on to the next um next uh Point um Global events they also make tourists and locals aware of local culture when you visit a new country you might end up learning one or two things about um their culture for example recently there was um the Qatar um FIFA
World Cup whereby people from all the corners of the world they visited k then they started knowing um more about Arab culture then others also started um wearing even Arabian regalia so the advantage of hosting a global event is that it can make tourist and locals aare
Of local culture so it is an opportunity of showcasing local culture and um culture is very broad it ranges from music it ranges uh to uh dance it also includes things such as um then Cuisine or even the diet the food which you the tourist will be taking then in
Addition to that we also have um spending is actually increased on the protection of tourist attractions the government may increase spending to protect uh tourist attraction which is actually a good thing then in addition to that we also have improved international relations with other countries When a Country Host
A global event it actually if if the event is successful it actually boost its relationship with neighboring countries or with the International Community it improves international relations with other countries then uh going on to the next um slide we also need to look on the negative side of
Things whenever you asked to look at the impact of a global event you should also put in mind the negative um impacts so I am going to unpack uh the negative impact so um there can be negative impact on the environment from a global event due to pollution from motor vehicle and
Aeroplane um traffic you would um B in You’ um realize that when there are several tourists coming to watch a global event um that would also mean that there will be so much traffic in terms of Motor Vehicles and also in terms of aeroplanes coming to the host
Country some you are aware that motor vehicles and airan traffic they actually pollute the environment they actually pollute the air which we breath so that can be listed as a negative um impact in addition to that the country can get into debt to pay for the additional infrastructure and new stadiums and the
Buildings not being used after the event usually when a country host the global event they usually borrow money large sums of money to build new infrastructure but you might realize that the infrastructure is only used temporarily for example most of these events it’s either they take place
Within a 30-day time frame so after 30 days you find that a new stadium which was built at an expensive cost will become um a white elephant or it won’t um be useful anymore so a country might end up getting into debt to pay for the addition infrastructure as in the case
Of Brazil in 20206 they ended up getting into debt simply because of the high cost of hting uh the FIFA World Cup now moving on to them um next Point uh um hosting of a global event can create a negative impression with tourist and prevents investment and international tourism
This usually happens if the event wasn’t a success it would um actually happen if the event was a success then the um the next thing which we are going to do we are going to read the information and study the image and answer the questions so there is
Information which is there cop 26 26 will be held in Glasgow UK in 2021 after the 2020 conference was postponed due to the covid-19 pandemic so the first question is um actually reads what does cop uh stand for for what does um cop stand for so in order for us to

The meeting was the 26th Edition of the meeting ends it got the name cop 2026 it was um the sixth edition of the meeting hence they gave it the name cop 2026 then moving on um to the next question which will say who attend cop
2026 um this is um uh this is a general question whereby you you would expect all countries to attend uh cop 2026 simply because it is a global matter the issue of climate change does not only affect one country um it affects um um all countries in the in the
