I can only install it upside down because the little tab has to rest on the “hook” of the derailleur hanger (sorry, I don’t know bike terminology but try to understand). Did I receive a faulty derailleur or is there a different way to install it. Derailleur model is Shimano RD-TZ31-A.

Appears you are missing the bolt that threads into the hangar. Did you look through the packaging thoroughly?
