Came across a great deal on a specialized with a very nice group set, issue is the frame was repaired on the seat stay and it is aluminum. Too sketchy or good enough?
Solid is not a word I would use to describe that aluminum repair.
I honestly don’t know if I’d trust it.
So you’re buying a bike with a bunch of good parts on it and a damaged frame. Move all the good parts over to a better frame?

Fuck that.

If this was a steel frame, I’d trust it to be welded right.
But I’m not going to trust some rando’s aluminum repair that may or probably not have been done correctly.

All we see is a lump of weld material covering the tube’s true status. Don’t think a skilled repair person would leave it like that. Underneath it could be a mess. Unless the parts alone are worth the sale price, a big no.

This is absolute unmitigated trash. The fact that it is undressed AND painted over means it is probably epoxy or worse underneath. Do not buy this

Thank you for everyone’s comments, I figured this was a terrible repair but I’m not a mechanic or know a lick about welding.
simplejackbikes on
Hell no. Aluminium can’t be welded without heat treatment. Don’t buy a broken frame.

The strange thing about this is that Specialized have a lifetime warranty on their frames. The person who did this repair didn’t even need to, they could have had the whole frame replaced.
I am aware that it could have been an older/sentimental bike but my point still stands.
boopiejones on
That’s a booger weld. If the price is low enough that you can buy another frame, move the parts over and still come out ahead, I’d say go for it. Otherwise I’d pass.

Repair isn’t the right word, more like delayed fuckery
blakeschluchter on
Might be structurally safe but that looks terrible. Grinders and paint make me the welder I aint.
Single_Restaurant_10 on
Nope. The frame is worthless, buy it for the parts only or buy something else

There are some great sales on at the moment.
