TODAY’S SUBJECT is a wintry cycle trip out to the Battle of Bosworth Heritage Centre and a tasty pastie for lunch. Join me.

GENERAL STUFF
I am retired from two careers of primary school teaching when I was deputy head of a Middle School and Primary School, and as a self employed Chalkboard Artist from 2002 until I reached the grand old age of 65 in 2016. Since I retired it’s like a second childhood but with more expensive toys.

I play guitar and write songs and have written about 14 songs for the local BBC radio station. I run a weekly (weakly) evening Acoustic session at a local pub and have been doing so for 14 years now. I also started an afternoon acoustic session in a quite large cafe in Nuneaton. Both premises were former songwriting clients of mine.

Much of the music I use on this channel is taken from epidemicsound.com free to use on Youtube for a reasonable monthly fee, and sometimes I suffer you with my own music.

Gear that I use:
DJI Mavic Mini 3 Drone.
Iphone 13Pro for camera, generally front facing so I can see myself in frame. Super quality especially if I keep the lens clean.
Go Pro11
Gimble is a Q2 Smooth by Zhiyun, I ought to use this more often because it was expensive.
Canon G7mk2
Sony IC recorder

Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone

Rhode videomic to do voice over on computer
Video editing with Final Cut Pro X
Polarduck Mini Tripod for mobile phone. This is so good and under £10.00 I bought two.
Lamcou bendy leg tripod
Tall Tripod is a Velbon CX 540
Mono pod is a Manfrotto Compact MMC3-02 and is very useful for getting high angles that look like low flight drone shots and so easy to carry on my bike along with the mini tripod.

My bike is a e28 Estarli electric bike.

I also enjoy gardening but lay no claims to have any expertise, and you might catch me out in the countryside of Warwickshire and nearby Leicestershire on a walk with my wife or on a bike ride.

Please comment below to inform further plans for my vlogs. I’d love to hear from you. If you don’t you will just get whatever bubbly ideas float to the surface of my slightly muddled elderly mind.

Hello it’s John Neil here it’s Wednesday the 17th of January 2024 I’m going for a bike ride if I look well wrapped up it’s because it’s about 2° Centigrade come on let’s Go well there’s a couple of reasons I’m going to stop here want to explain what I’m doing today and secondly there is a seat here which is very Nice and the seat is very nice and I heard a buzzard and I’ve just heard well some crows or Rooks might have been been even a raven and certainly a green woodpecker so that’s nice just to pause a while oh it’s um I’m doing it all right by the

Way I’ve got this on which is a really nice thick fleece M jumper and some under that so uh and two pairs of gloves this is the inner pair me hat this scarf managing right actually little bit pulling on the chest bit of coal getting through here that’s it

Right well um what am I doing today I I just have a chance to go out for lunch on my own on the bike so and I’m going to make my way up to the Battle of Bosworth Field Center they got a little c a big Cafe up there actually I just

Hope there’s not a load of kid school kids there which might be um but there you go and uh yeah it’s just a nice bright clear day just happens to be very cold a lot of snow up in in Scotland and uh north of England uh but

None of it down here it’s really quite dry which means it’s not wet and it’s not icy which is good I have the Drone with me we’ll see what happens there H right better Press On Oh just got to stop off and listen to this some pigs in this Barn this sound look them being torn apart what A noise you can smell them too and so I make it into Market Pworth Well I can talk to you going down here because two things one it’s very quiet this is the Gated Road and it’s downhill so I don’t have to Pedal either and it really is one of my favorite Lanes as I may have said before it’s very popular for people just

Walking because there are some gates on this road really I’m not quite sure why um but uh it does restrict the traffic a bit which is great hello well it’s a very pleasant day to come out actually so I’m more than happy to see people along here that would have

Been me as well in the past right give a ding on me Bell I think she’s heard me my bell worked they heard it oh it’s a bit wet here and uh wet means ah wet means ice got to be careful the road is generally dry CU it

Hasn’t rained much but where there are some uh pieces of water left on the road got to be very careful because um it can be very icy and the temperature now probably only about 2 or 3° go to the farm end of this road which comes out at Su Chini and turn

Right and uh that’s the entrance to the Bosworth Battlefield Center oh it’s gorgeous along here look at it it’s great these trees I just love them look at them Fantastic Ah wonderful look at this beautiful Winter’s day here in leerer South leerer in fact it is really nice just to be out away from all the nonsense mind you playing like that is a bit of a reminder of it as well um where’s that that’s quite High actually

I could check it out it might even be London to Edinburgh or something no more more than that we’re close to East Midlands Airport we see a few planes flying over but when you’re out here makes all the difference wonderful I take it all back it was United Airlines trip 7 going to

Washington from London I’ve just realized I’ve not shown you a map of where I’ve gone because I’ve just come down to the entrance to the battlefield Center and it’s a long straight road so fast I couldn’t use the camera anyway here I am um made my way

Up to Home Village through there along to uh shenton and off to Market Bosworth this is the Gated Road and then I just come down that long hill and this is the battlefield Center back out there later on and down this way lovely trees are on this route up to dadlington onto Stoke

Golding and then back to home on the hill and back home this slight raise in the land is called ambient Hill which is why they thought this is where the Battle of Bosworth took place anyway all I know is at the restaurant here there is a pasty

A cup of coffee and a nice cake waiting for me Margaret and I have been coming here for the last 30 odd years and we’re here before this development took place all these Timbers are from the old tithe barn and this pasty is soon not going to exist the bikes locked up the tithe barn looks great and I’m a happy Man well here I am at the Battle of Bosworth Heritage Center in South leerer and um one thing they did get right it did take place in 1485 and therefore 600 years ago plus when Henry chuda defeated King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth couple of

Things they got wrong though one it wasn’t here it was about 2 miles down the road done a video that about that before now now and secondly uh King Richard’s body was not uh around here or left here anywhere they didn’t know where it was until very recently and

They found it in a car park in Leicester under a big letter r was a reserved car park but it happened to have Richard’s body there and uh there was a quite a uh celebration of finding it and uh burying it again in leester Cathedral so and

They did a film about it it was a remarkable story but anyway it was a turning point in British history and it happened here there’s another lovely tree here look at this one well this is uh it’s always beautiful here we come out for walks here quite often and uh I just

Absolutely adore it um I don’t if you can see in the distance there lot there’s H some smoke it’s um a wood fuel Farm I think they’re drying wood out and they’re always uh got this smoke pouring across fields which actually I like the smell of I love the smell of

Wood smoke it’s uh super right uh let’s set off back um the old electric bike’s doing well mind you the batteries are going where we on oh three bars left and um I’ve got a about 6 or8 miles to go so absolutely fine um no trouble

Whatsoever and yeah that was a very nice lunch by the way a pasty and a lemon tart thing great look I like that I like lunches I like a good lunch no I’m not fat honest honest I’ve got lots of layers on stop it looks as if we’ve got some smoke continuity here

As I go across the uh aspid delaz Canal which you can see is absolutely Frozen not solid just a skim of ice over the top these male malard ducks have beautiful iridescent heads that green is superb in the sunlight I near said incandescent I don’t know incandescent seems quite good

Really there are some Hardy folk who live in these Canal boats all year round and it must be a bit tough in the winter uh this Swan is not a pet the all the swans I understand are owned by the queen oh now the king of course well that’s all for

Now and I’ll see you next time oh by the way don’t forget do comment I love to read your comments and uh okay subscribe as well if you feel the urge bye-bye

  1. John, these videos must take all day to produce. The shots of you riding towards and away, drone footage plus stop offs along the way would have all taken extra time than just riding with camera. You are making interesting quality films.
I’ve never been to Bosworth Heritage Centre might just change that and soon.
Henry is supposed to have camped near Atherstone, some historians have him camped near Caldecote, either location means he took the A5 route to Bosworth. In a previous video your drone shows the excavations in the fields off the A5/Higham lane. I think the archaeologists were looking for something to do with this. Richard camped on Ambion Hill so Henry would most likely route his way off the A5 towards Higham on the hill.
