There are expensive widgets for this purpose but I’m wondering about just using one of these to step the threads down to fit the hanger alignment tool into the headset compression bolt. I realize the M6 male end is much shorter than that of the fancy tools, like the Abbey.

Don’t see any flaw in your plan. Thread sizes match up.
I honestly never even knew there was lever alignment tool. Can’t believe this is a thing and would never use it myself.
