Hello all, I’ve been experiencing an issue with this ancient Altus derailleur. It’s very loose and as shown later in the video I believe there’s is something wrong with the pin that isn’t seated properly. Is there a quick fix to make it serviceable for tomorrow’s commute?
The bike was a local find that I’ve been riding casually before deciding on some upgrades. It’s a 90s Dahon Mountain Classic (I believe) which is hopefully destined to become an easy bike to pack in a little car or train and take on a couple of days’ riding. I would like to upgrade it to a modern 2×9 setup with trigger shifters at some point. If this derailleur is dead, it may be time to have a word with the LBS…

The first thing I would do is give a good cleaning with a degreaser, then lube it back up. See if that helps.
The second thing I’d check is the cable…disconnect it, and pull it out of the housing. If it’s not corroded, put a few drops of lube on it, and hook it back up. If it’s corroded, then it should be replaced. They’re pretty cheap to buy if you’re comfortable replacing it yourself…I get them for $5-$10 (USD) from pretty much any bike shop.
If it’s clean, and tension is good, then the issue is probably the derailleur itself.
