Scotland became the first country in the UK to introduce a ban on vehicles parking on pavements.

As a result, drivers could be fined £100 for these parking behaviours; reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days.

The Transport (Scotland) Act 2019 bans pavement parking, double parking and parking at dropped kerbs, although there are certain exemptions designated by Scottish councils for example for emergency vehicles.

It means that from Monday 11th December 2023 councils across the country can begin enforcing the law.

  2. Yet another money making effort, proof of this, Edinburgh Council first to jump on board. I live on a bend in a very busy road, 20mph limit which nobody abides by, not even school buses. I park fully on the pavement after losing more than one wing mirror whilst ensuring there's still space for a wheelchair or double buggy to pass safely as advised by police. Don't anyone kid yourself this is about safety. I've asked my LA numerous times for help in our street and they've ignored me because nobody has been killed yet. That's what East Dunbartonshire is waiting for.

  3. Could use this legislation in my home village in England, where selfish drivers (usually of the very aggressive Karen type) make the roads less safe (actually unsafe given the exact circumstances) by blocking the views for traffic emerging from side roads and concealing the presence of pedestrians, by parking on pavements. They're simply too lazy to walk from a free car park less than 100 yds, away. The area is filled with pedestrian schoolchildren but the police can't stop bad parking. One day someone will be injured. No doubt. Hefty fines and impounding of offenders? Yes! ASAP. Please!

  4. Although I completely agree with this ban it is becoming increasingly difficult to drive around 'our country', i.e. the UK. You now see different rules creeping into different countries, Wales 20 mph, Scotland similar and parking, are we now to issue a 'Highway Code' in 4 parts??. What if Drakeford now thinks we should drive on the right? in a way none of this should be allowed.

  5. I think that law is fine. I'd like to see footpaths for the pedestrians but what happens in an emergency scenario? If cars are made to park on the road (as they should) I think it should be up to the councils to widen the roads, or move the footpaths over to accommodate the road user and the pedestrian.

Can you imagine a disabled person who has a car and can't park outside his house? this person may have to walk quite a way up the road to get home. Before issuing big fines, I think the council will need to get their act together. This isn't including all the cars parked in every street, I think it's going to cause a lot of trouble, and I don't think anyone will benefit from it.

  6. Trying to bring up excuse of emergency vehicles well build driveway if you have more than one car suggest you sell the other or park on wider road not hard.
