You have been preparing for UPSC for the past 4 years. From morning to evening, you are only studying. No matter what happens, you have to clear UPSC. Friends, friends, brother, sister, roaming around, nothing. Only studies. Because to educate you, to make you an officer, your
Parents have taken a huge loan. If the paper doesn’t come out, what will happen? What will I tell people? What will I tell my parents? How will I look at myself? And the loan? He will never be able to pay it. What happened? Scared? By the way, it’s true.
Because today, out of every 10 UPSC students, 7 of them have the same story. Have you ever thought why? These days, you must have seen in the news about a boy from a small district in India who used to sell vegetables and has cracked the UPSC exam.
Some parents have even sold their land to finance their child’s UPSC preparation. I don’t have land. What will we do? If the son doesn’t have a job, what will we do with the land? But do you know, that every year, more than 10 lakh children apply for UPSC. [Powered by Dubverse]
This means that the success rate is only 0.1%. UPSC is like a cycle. UPSC is like a vicious cycle – either you succeed or get stuck. But I’ll get another chance to try again. I’ll probably never do it. But if you see the craze for UPSC, it’s an unaccountable craze.
And where the craze is more, that’s where the business happens. In 2017, Delhi’s ALS coaching centre claims, that out of the 990 children, who have taken UPSC this year, and gone to civil services, out of them, 244 were from our institute. After that, even Wajiram and Ravi, along with other
Institutes, claimed to have more than 400 successful candidates. And after this, a different person comes, Chanakya, who says that out of 990, 355 are my children. I would suggest to him to take a break from UPSC and enjoy the game for a while. According to their claims, they have produced more officers
Than the number of available seats. No changes needed. The translation is already contextual and modern. Even to teach people an optional subject, 50,000 to 50,000 rupees extra is taken. And this has been going on for years. Because of which, today, our country’s coaching industry,
Has become of 58,088 crores. But think about it, that despite having such great private jobs in the market, why are people running after UPSC so much? After all, what do you get by taking UPSC out, which is nowhere else? Well, to understand this, you need to know where UPSC originated from.
UPSC was established by British East India Company. [Powered by Dubverse] And initially, the company directors used to appoint people based on their own preferences, thinking “this person seems suitable, let’s make them an officer.” And after that, they were sent to the Haleybury College in London for training, and then returned to India.
But things took a turn in 1854 when Thomas Babington Macaulay submitted a report to the British Parliament. The report suggested that the East India Company should hire civil servants based on merit rather than patronage. In simpler terms, don’t hire people based on connections, but only those who are genuinely qualified.
But how will we know if they are qualified or not? Look at the paper. And after hearing this, everyone said, So this is where Imperial Civil Service Examinations started. In 1855, the first Imperial Civil Service Examination was held in London. And this paper was taken for the Civil Service Commission.
Back then, male candidates between the ages of 18 to 23 were eligible to take this exam, which was based on European classics. That’s why it was very difficult for Indians to crack this exam. But in 1864, Satyendra Nath Tagore, who was Rabindranath Tagore’s older brother, became the first government official in the country.
Now after this, for the next 50 years, we Indians appealed to the British, that these examinations, should be conducted in India instead of London. But there was a problem here. If this had happened, many Indians would have become civil servants, but the British were not willing to conduct the exams in India.
Now this was the time, when World War I had started. [Powered by Dubverse] Montague-Shemford Reforms. In this, it was suggested, that the ICS examinations, should be conducted in India. So that the British, can run the country easily. For this purpose, the Federal Public Service Commission was set up. [Powered by Dubverse]
ICS examinations were conducted in Delhi. [Powered by Dubverse] So at that time, people having an ICS job, was a big deal. And people were very eager to become ICS. The problem was that even after the exam was conducted in India, many Indians were not given the opportunity to take the test.
That’s why in 1919, when Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, wanted to become an ICS officer, he went to London for this. And one year later, when the results were announced, he secured the 4th position in the merit list. But he said, all this is fine, but I won’t work for the British.
They have to be removed from the country. And when India gained independence in 1947, the Federal Public Service Commission was renamed as the Union Public Service Commission. Meaning UPSC. And during that time, the Imperial Civil Service was transformed into the Indian Administrative Service. Meaning IAS. Now see, the British, had already left.
So now if someone takes out the Civil Service, then he will work for the country. Because of which, the craze for the Imperial Civil Service, after becoming the Indian Administrative Service, had increased even more. The UPSC Civil Service exam has three main parts, and the first one is called the Preliminary Examination.
Which is also known as Prelims. This is a written examination, which has two papers. The first paper is General Studies Paper 1, and the second paper is General Studies Paper 2. [Powered by Dubverse] There are a lot of topics in this. Well, you know, out of the 10 lakh students who appear for
The Prelims, only 10,000 are able to crack it. This is why, [Powered by Dubverse] Now after the Prelims, comes the Mains. Which has a total of 9 papers. [Powered by Dubverse] Time Management. Here, candidates have to write lengthy essays with very little time provided.
But those who clear this, are called for the interview. Now out of 10,000, only a few students get this opportunity. During the interview, a lot of emphasis is given to logical reasoning, intelligence, and attitude. The most important factor, however, is quick thinking. And once selected, these candidates are sent to the Lal
Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. Here they are sent for training. Now, many people might be under the impression that there are only two exams and one interview, and that you can prepare for them at home. So what’s the cost of this? Do people really have to sell their land?
Look, this is not as simple as it looks. Yes, there are many people who prepare for UPSC while staying at home. But most of the students, go to a coaching institute to prepare. Like if you see in Delhi, then New Rajendra Nagar, and Mukherjee Nagar. These two places are very famous for UPSC.
Here, each coaching centre, charges around Rs. 70,000 to Rs. [Powered by Dubverse] [Powered by Dubverse] 50,000 for optional subjects too. [Powered by Dubverse] 10,000-20,000 separately. For aspirants who come from outside Delhi to prepare for UPSC in Delhi, it’s not just about studying but also about making a living.
And if you go to New Rajendra Nagar, even a small room will cost you a monthly rent of Rs. Now think, this is just for one year. No changes needed, the translation is already contextual and modern. And if he belongs to the OBC category, he can make up to 9
Attempts until he reaches the age of 35. And for SC-ST, there are unlimited attempts, until he turns 37 years old. Now, calculate the total expenses by multiplying the yearly expenses with the number of attempts and years involved in the preparation. Moreover, if you factor in inflation, you’ll realize that
Preparing for UPSC is not an inexpensive endeavor. And just think about it once, that how many families are there in India, who can actually afford this expense? Very few. But despite this, people are busy giving attempts. I mean, what’s the big deal? Is it easy to become an IAS
Officer? Or do they get a very good salary? Let me tell you, neither of these is true. After completing their training, when a candidate gets an appointment, he gets the post of Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Under-Secretary, or Assistant Secretary. And all these individuals are appointed directly by the
Central government. However, they are required to work in collaboration with the state government. And some of these individuals may also be required to work in public sector units or national organizations such as Niti Aayog. And after 4-5 years as a junior scale officer, they are eligible for a promotion.
And after this, they can become Assistant District Magistrates, Deputy Secretaries, or Under-Secretaries. [Powered by Dubverse] And gradually, one of these individuals climbs the ladder to reach the highest position in the Administrative Service, which is the Cabinet Secretary of India. If you take a look at their salary structure, they receive payment
Starting from Rs. during their training period. 33,000 to Rs. When they begin their career, their starting salary is determined by the Basic Salary of the 7th Pay Commission, which is currently at Rs. And the salary of the Cabinet Secretary of India, is around Rs. 2.5 lakhs.
But what’s really fascinating is that they receive a variety of allowances in addition to their salary. Like Government Bungalow, Domestic Help, and for official and personal use, they get a blue car. Now after hearing all this, one thing comes to mind. That even after 35 years, if my salary is around Rs.
2.5 lakhs, I can earn a lot more in a corporate job. Actually, UPSC is not a craze. There are a lot of things here that are not visible from the outside. Well, the best thing about a government job is that unless you commit a major crime, you won’t lose your job. You
Might get suspended, but you won’t be fired. [Powered by Dubverse] Here, even the CEO is fired from the company. But someone who is preparing for UPSC understands the psychology of it. You know, some of the people who take the UPSC exam come from families with IAS officers and civil servants already in them.
Like their father, grandfather, or other relatives. So, there is a little family pressure. Like, I want to get fired, I want to become an officer too. And if I don’t become one, then I won’t get respect. However, there are also aspirants from economically underprivileged backgrounds in the same situation.
Look, a lot of us, don’t realize it after living in big cities. But the reality is that in our country, caste-related issues still persist in certain areas. It really happens. [Powered by Dubverse] And for all of them, it’s a big deal. UPSC is the only way
For them to escape poverty and achieve something. It’s not about money, it’s about power. The general public is hesitant to harass the family of a collector or DM. If someone prepares for UPSC, they have a better chance of getting out of poverty and gaining power.
Even today, in many situations, having power is crucial for people. Because if that doesn’t happen, their family will face a lot of harassment. And this is the reason. Parents spend their hard-earned money to make their children officers, no matter how much they have to spend or
How far they have to send their children for education. But people are taking advantage of this to fill their pockets. There are so many coaching institutes, online tutoring groups, and educational influencers who deceive lakhs of people and sell their dreams of cracking UPSC for their own personal gain.
And the truth is that their benefit is not in making you an officer, but in getting you to make as many attempts as possible. People who are preparing for UPSC will say, what should I do? Should I stop preparing? Not at all. No changes needed. The current translation is already contextual and modern.
Just understand things a little practically. UPSC is like a marathon, which takes years. So if you win, that’s great. But even if you don’t win, you should have a plan. If you have taken a loan from your parents for UPSC preparation, it can make things very challenging.
So you should have an option other than UPSC so that you can sustain your life. [Powered by Dubverse] Even here in the market, you will find a lot of people who can ruin your life by giving you extra income and the greed to earn more money.
These people will tell you that there is an online business opportunity, something that can change your life forever. [Powered by Dubverse] You can also live a lifestyle like me. All these things will be with you. And if you fall for it, it will be very hard for you to break free.
Do you want to know how all this is done with you? Then watch this ride video.

I feel UPSC is overrated
Most people just want to get into IAS because of power + black money 😢😢😢
Bhai mera 3 time attempt hai 🙂
I’ve cleared “UPSC” exam and interview twice and supposedly came in top 10 after interview and everything the second time and then joined. So, to all uninformed, please stop calling UPSC as IAS or what ever IAS/IPS/IFS or whichever Central Service as “UPSC”. UPSC only conducts exams for Central Service. “It does not mean IAS ONLY.”
Attempt isliye lagta hai ki humlog exam ko nahi samaj pate hai. Jo bi topper thum log dekte ho wo log exam ko achha se janne ka badh hi top karte hai.
Kuch log bekar mein ratta marke attempt mein lage hote hai.
