You can cycle from Brixton in south London to Streatham, entirely on quiet streets and protected cycle lanes.
The route is 5.1km long (3.2 miles) and makes use of the Railton LTN, Streatham Hill LTN, Streatham Wells LTN, and various safe crossings – as well as paths in Brockwell Park.

Hello and welcome back to London cycle routes today I’ll be showing you how to cycle from brickton in South London to stram just down the road this ride takes about 20 minutes and you can do the whole thing on quiet streets and protected cycle Lanes by public transport the same
Journey takes a little over 20 minutes so cycling is just as fast despite our ride taking a slightly IND direct route to make it more pleasant and avoid the worst of the traffic if you find this video useful or you just enjoy watching it then don’t
Forget to hit subscribe on YouTube as I try to post new videos just like it every week on this channel I’d also like to say a huge thank you to everybody who supports the channel on patreon if you’d like to contribute as well then you can
Find a link in the description below the video all right let’s get going so we’re starting on Atlantic Road at the end of Electric Avenue and we’re going to head south although it looks quiet now this section of Atlantic Road does get quite busy with Vans and cars
Loading in the businesses along here so do be careful as you cycle down there it is only a short stretch however and it’s our way of getting onto this section of Atlantic Road and heading towards Railton Road this section is always quiet and that’s because of this bus
Gate that we’re just passing through here which only lets the 322 bus pass down this street apart from that bus you’re unlikely to see very much motor traffic down here and as you can see we’re seeing a lot more people on bikes than we are cars Vans or whatever
Talking of the bus here’s one now and as you can see some sections are a little bit too narrow to pass it safely so just watch out on some of the narrower bits and do what I didn’t just get out of the way for for it it doesn’t take a second
To get through I find it interesting how you can run a pretty frequent bus route through a cycle route like this and it’s still a really really nice place to cycle the bus turns up roughly every 12 minutes or so according to the timetable and while that’s a really good frequency
For a bus as a passenger it’s also not really a problem if you need to use the street to cycle down it if you think about it if you passed a car on a street only every 12 minutes then you consider it to be a really quiet street and a
Really nice one to ride on another regular feature to be aware of on Railton road is that the far end which we’ll pass through in a second actually turns into a market on Sunday it’s the section outside hhill Railway Station from about 10:00 a.m. it’s closed and
You have to Dismount I actually shot this on a Sunday and I came down a little bit early cuz I wanted to show you the street when it was open but you can see there’s already Vans turning up to set up the market it’s closed from around this point up until the junction
Will pass through in a second so you do have to push your bike for this short section if you come here during the day on a Sunday there might also be a little bit more traffic on Railton road because of Market Traders driving Vans to the market one feature I wasn’t expecting to
See today as we cycle into brockell park is on our left here which is a uh a large Christmas tree sales Point that’s just been set up there I think they seem to be selling from the beginning of November which seems like quite an early point to get a Christmas tree but I
Guess if you want to get one then that’s totally fine uh one thing to knowe about Brockwell Park well there are a couple of things actually the first thing is that the pars here are obviously shared with pedestrians so just make sure that you ride courteously don’t go too
Quickly and give everyone plenty of space you don’t want to upset anybody going down here and it’s a lovely park so you may as well go through it and enjoy the view there really is no rush the second thing to say about the park is that it does close at night and in
The winter which is when I’m shooting this that means at Sundown which is pretty early at this time of year if the park is closed then you’ll have to cycle on Norwood Road for this section and then rejoin our route when we exit the park onto Brockwell Park Gardens there
Is a partial cycle Lane on W road but it’s only in One Direction which is quite annoying and actually Lambeth Council which runs this part of town actually uh published this week their Road danger reduction strategy which is actually a pretty cool document and includes a few decent ideas and one of
Those ideas is that there should be protected cycle Lanes on main roads like Norwood Road and that crucially they should also go in both directions not One Direction so I do hope they follow through on that because it would be nice to have a safe route along Norwood road
So you could have a 24hour route through here and people who were commuting in the winter coming back from the office or from work didn’t have to uh to Brave Norwood road which isn’t a particularly nice place to be riding especially in the dark I think Trinity rise here is a
Bit of a hill and although it’s not filtered and there is through traffic allowed on here I do find that it is it tends to be pretty quiet so it’s not too much of a problem to go up the hill you might run into one or two cars however I
Think one reason that it’s quite quiet is that although the street itself isn’t filtered Upper tuls Hill which is the street dead ahead of us is filtered and there’s no through traffic on this street here so that reduces the usefulness of Trinity rise as a through
Route and kind of reduces the number of vehicles on there we have to turn left in a second and pass through an old road closure this is great in that it keeps the traffic on the streets quiet but it’s not very well designed and it doesn’t have any dropped curbs so you
Can’t cycle through it at the very least that needs to be rebuilt just to stick some drop curbs in but it would also be nice to turn it into a slightly nicer public space I think as it is in a quite densely populated part of town which
Kind of lacks public space another thing that you could do to improve the streets around here would be to introduce a controll parking Zone as there is so much parking on these roads here it’s really just a large car storage area and taming these streets and maybe turning
Some of those parking spaces into planting or something like that would probably make the whole thing a lot nicer there’s also a drop curb needed there by the way now we’re about to cross the South circular road which is a busy road and there’s currently only an
Informal crossing here however I do know that in the next few months Transport for London are going to be building a cycle zebra crossing over the road there how do I know that well I was cycling over there a couple of weeks ago and I ran into two guys holding a document I
Couldn’t work out what it was it looked like maybe a traffic survey or some blueprints or something like that so I asked them and they said they worked for transport for London and that they would basically scoping out the site to build a cycle zebra crossing over there and
Turned out they were actually holding the blueprints for it looked really good so um yeah that’s great and I can’t wait for to happen it will really improve the route through there um I actually did a bit of background research after that encounter and it turned out that the
Crossing there had actually been consulted on ages ago but it just hadn’t been built yet so they’re finally getting around to doing it by the way I mentioned that I shot this video at the start of November and I’m also recording the commentary on the 5th of November
The day that the video is going out for those of you who don’t live in the UK I know there are some of you the fifth November in Britain’s bonfire night which means that people let off fireworks all night so if you can hear a lot of fireworks in the background of
The video it’s because of that I had the option of whether or not to not do a video tonight and release it another time or just to record it with the fireworks in the background so I’ve gone for theat cuz I didn’t want to miss a
Week I’ve got a pretty good streak going so I thought I would just go for it and I hope it doesn’t spoil the video for anyone now we’re currently in a low traffic neighborhood in ltn called stram Hill ltn and there’s a great Crossing from this ltn into another ltn we’re
Just using the crossing now it’s a zebra crossing a parallel zebra Crossing and you do have priority over that but do be careful on it as not motorists don’t always stop on it and we’ve crossed that and we’ve gone into a second low traffic neighborhood here this is actually the
Stret and Wells low traffic neighborhood and this is new it just went in a couple of weeks ago and it’s actually the reason I’m doing the video here CU it really completes the route down to stram Via these back streets this is a really ambitious low traffic neighborhood for a
Start it’s absolutely huge and it’s also uh very out of London it’s quite easy to put in ltns in in a London cuz a lot fewer people drive but actually in streten Wells about half of households do have a car the project is still bedding in and there’s still quite a bit
Of non-compliance on some of the filter there’s a lot of people just driving through it cuz their saavs tell them to do it but as you can see we haven’t run into any cars and we’re not going to be running into any cars for the last bit
Of this journey it really is very very quiet at the moment and that wasn’t always the case it is a Sunday morning so obviously take it with a pinch of salt but take my word for it these streets were not always this quiet and uh I think it’s made a really positive
Impact to the cycling conditions around here um we’re going to be ending the ride on stram high road which is right here at the end of Sunny Hill Road and uh there’s also an interesting uh sort of treat for us here such a car-based treat weirdly if you keep an eye out
You’ll see uh a few vintage cars driving past us those are actually out for the Brighton veteran car run which is a drive down I think from London down to the south coast of all these old vintage cars part of me wishes that cars still looked like bit more like that as
They’re a little bit less terrifying to share the road with I think than uh than some of the ones been driven around these days but uh yeah kind of an interesting site anyway so we are here and thanks so much for watching that guys do let me know in the comments what
You think of that make sure you hit the like button so other people can find the video and hit subscribe if you haven’t already and you enjoyed it thanks again to everyone on the patreon really appreciate your support and for those of you who want to join it you can find a

There's sign post in the road at 2.44, that could be a hazard at night 🤔
great video!
The fire gate when existing that park should be replaced with a bollard. I also thpught there were plans for a cycle lane on the main road between Streatham and Streatham Hil stations or thereabouts, any progress? In due time, I'd also love to see cycle lanes from Brixton to Croydon along the A23.
6:07 the cyclist ahead made use of a dropped kerb, or was he cycling on a ped only pavement.
Nice route…and virtually "live" 😉👍 🎆🎇🔥
Thanks, nice route!
was wondering what's the state of cycle lanes on Seven Sisters/Tollington rds? Are you planning to make videos using those?
Buses are fantastic to cycle with, predictable and slow enough to not be a hazard. Can normally count on the driver being aware and using their mirrors
Do you have a link to the road danger reduction document that you mentioned?
9 times out of 10 I take the left before that first 322 appears left go right into Mayal Rd, thus avoiding the worst of Railton with it's crappy speed bumps and buses. It's about a minute slower but much calmer. If that park is open, though, I'll usually enter the park on Water Lane instead after turning off Railton before the bus gate.
The new Streatham Wells LTN will make the southern part of that ride much more pleasant. Though those streets are narrow and residential, they have all been used as ratruns, with all that has entailed in traffic volume, noise, conflict and overspeeding. Thankfully no more. I'm sure we're going to see many more people cycling through that area now.
Cycling through Brockwell Park is a breach of the bye-laws. People could get fined for following your route.
Nice video. Isn't it illegal to ride on the pavements though?
Thanks very much — good route! Would be nice to see more to the east and west of Streatham Wells LTN — would open up Tooting / Balham one way and West Norwood the other. Do you know what's happening with the West Dulwich LTN?
good to hear about the new cycle crossing over the south circular into the Tulse Hill estate, much needed as it's currently a tricky crossing
I regularly use this route in both directions, I do avoid the Tulse Hill estate however because I've been aggressed a couple times there which is unfortunate. I usually carry on passed Brockwell park and fight with the traffic.
Love this channel. Can we have Stamford Hill to Hampstead Heath?
