  1. You would likely have to cold set the rear dropout spacing from 126mm to 130mm and need a new rear wheel/hub with a cassette body style freehub.

They do make 9 speed free*wheels* but I believe they still require 130 or 135mm spacing.

It is possible, but most likely will require a new wheel and cold setting the frame (in layman’s terms, bending) to fit a wider hub.

Probably worth considering if the conversion would actually give you a bigger pizza (gear range), or just cut it in to smaller pieces….

If your dropouts are 126mm, you can fit a 130mm hub in there without cold setting, just spread the stays slightly.

I spy a Suntour barcon on there, but also v brakes, so it seems like some parts have definitely been swapped. What is your rear hub, that is what will determine what cassette you can fit.

I’ve got early 90s Shimano 3×7 on one of my bikes which I was going to swap to 2×10 tiagra that I already have laying around, but honestly it works so well that I didn’t bother. So the question is do you really want to do it?
