  1. Sounds like a reasonable call to take the car Wed – Fri.

We had some crazy weather today – we’re south but not that far from where they had all the tornadoes. For my morning commute, I did ride my bike because it was a short distance. But it wasn’t fun in the steady wind of around 25 mph with gusts in the low 40 mph range. And this afternoon when I had a longer commute to do, I took the car. No guilt.

  2. I’m fortunate to live in a much warmer climate so I ride everyday, rain or shine. Current morning temps are upper 40s & evening temps upper 50s. I haven’t driven my car to work in over 2yrs.

i went for a ride yesterday evening in edmonton. the problem is today’s snow dump means paths and bike lanes won’t be cleared for a while.

  4. Rain, high winds, or heavy snowfall. Even then, I’ll ride in the snow, it’s just a visibility thing if doing it during hours of darkness

  5. I don’t have one. I’m in Portland, OR so it’s never nasty enough to be dangerous or undoable. When the weather gets worse, the roads are less safe to drive on, and I’m even more likely to avoid driving.

Once there is enough ice to be miserable to bike on, though, I’ll switch to running.

  6. Coldest I’ve ridden is -35F/-37C, which is how I know my cutoff is -20F/-29C.

Riding in a lot of fresh snow is hellacious, as I get tossed around, so if there’s more than ~1″/2.5cm, give or take depending on type, of fresh snow I take the car. Ice is no problem with good tires and a cautious approach, though. It’s really awesome to ride as snow is coming down, though, it just gives the world an almost magical appearance!

I also just find heavy rain utterly miserable, at least up here where rain is always very cold – there’s just no other kind! Riding home I’m a bit more generous with where I’ll declare the rain “too heavy” than in the morning on the way to work.

  7. Southeast US commuter here. Don’t really have a cutoff, it’s more the overall conditions. January is our coldest month. Mornings can be chilly but it’s usually in the 50s in the afternoon. I drove today because of the monsoon-like conditions with tornado warnings. It will be in the mid 30s F tomorrow morning but still windy after the storms. I’ll likely ride my bike to work.

Those Edmonton temps look next level to me.

  8. I rode my bike in the winter when I lived in Montreal. I was much younger then. I had spiked tires, double gloves and a ski mask. My toes and fingers were always hurting for a few moments whenever I arrived to the building. They were red as apples. I fell down at least a couple of times per week and to come back at night was a risk as cars don’t really see you if it’s snowing (and don’t really expect you in the winter).

So, back then, I did up to -30C easy.

Now, no thank you. I live in the We(s)t Coast and if it snows or if its frozen, I stay home. So my limit currently is at 0C.
