I’d love to hear thoughts about these routes. For clarification, we would start in Christchurch, arrive early to Queenstown, which we are flying out of, and would then choose one of the three Section 2 options, which must return to Queenstown. The Milford Sound option would leave us with excess time and the Otago Rail Section would require us to do almost 50 miles per day.
The red path is the first section, starting in Christchurch. After Queenstown we can either head to Milford Sound or head southeast. However, there is a section after the Clutha Gold trail where you’re supposed to take a 10 mile boat ride to link back up with the road. Has anyone done this trail and is it possible to avoid scheduling a boat? Alternatively would you suggest doing the Otago Rail Trail instead? Finally, I’ve heard that the section between Alexandra and Queenstown has a sketchy gorge. Is it possible to hitchhike through there and/or should it be avoided altogether?
