Hey there, my friends pedal has just fallen off mid ride from a Marin bike he bought off bikes online. Not sure if the crank is stripped or if we can put it back on. Does this warrant getting in contact with Marin or bikes online?

Yes you stripped the threads on the crank. You could try to get it re threaded but for the trouble/cost u probably should just get a new crank arm

It’s stripped – the only repair choices are a helicoil or replace the crank arm. It doesn’t look like there’s any chance of repairing the threads.
I doubt the seller will help – the bike probably came without the pedals fitted so they’ll blame the installation. No harm in trying I suppose.
One thing that sometimes works is to thread the pedal in from the back side of the crank using the few good threads left. As it moves in it will refresh the threads that were stripped. Then you can remove the pedal and carefully thread it in the right way. Not sure that will work in this case because there’s a lot of damage.
Bikes don’t ship with pedals installed, whomever installed that pedal didn’t tighten it properly. The threads are pretty trashed, I wouldn’t trust them anymore. If a shop near you can helicoil it you might save a few bucks, otherwise you’ll have to replace the crankarm.

I’d throw those away. You can get a nice set of used, high quality cranks for less than the cost of a repair.

Wait, it happened on your drive side? Thats odd. It always happens on non drive side because of how thread can get loose.
Your threads failed. Either because somebody forced a left side (left-handed thread) pedal on the right side or because of too much or too little torque (probably the later).
