Hi everyone and welcome to my new video. If you clicked on this video it’s maybe because you are applying to L’Oréal for internships and you perhaps noticed the offer in Industrial Development and you asked yourself, “What is Industrial Development?” but don’t worry I assure you that I was in your shoes when

I was applying for the offer and I asked myself the same question. So after 2 internships in Industrial Development I am going to explain in detail about the role in this video. Let’s go! So I did 2 internships in Industrial Development, the first one as a

Colour and Artwork Developer for La Roche-Posay and the second as a Product Developer at Lancôme. The Development team is actually at the heart of Operations and it’s them who link the brand, so the Marketing and all Operational teams. So we’re going to start with the Product Development

Project Manager who is also known as the Technical or Operational Project Manager. He or she is somewhat like a bandmaster who coordinates all the operational teams, well all project teams in product development whether it’s a launch, a renovation, an extension of a product line or even an innovation project but

What does it mean to develop a product? According to Google, it means “a process that consists of giving life to an idea of an innovative product to commercialize the finished good in the market.” So in my words, it’s taking an idea or a concept from the Marketing team, concretize and industrialize

It, because in L’Oréal they don’t produce 10 or 15 pieces they try making hundreds, thousands or sometimes even a million pieces. To do this, they work in pairs with their Colour & Artwork Development and their operational project team. So they coordinate all project teams hence the reference bandmaster!

Now let’s move on to the Colour & Artwork Developer, so they are in charge of all decorations development meaning all components that make up a product. For example, here I have a Lancôme serum and this product is made up of a dropper,

A bottle and maybe this product is also sold in a folding box. So the Colour & Artwork Developers, they take care of the entire aesthetic development of a product. The Colour & Artwork Developer is in close contact with suppliers and subcontractors

Because it’s with them whom they plan trials, validate shades and default range boards and it’s also them who is in charge of the nomenclature management of a product it’s very important to track products and so it’s the C&A Developer who assures that the products are well registered in the traceability systems of L’Oréal.

If I try to give you an example of a product development life cycle. It starts with the Marketing who comes along with their brief and their idea/mock-up, they’ll go “Hi Product Developers, we have an idea and a concept that we want to develop, launch a product

For this or that date, can you give us a cost and timing estimate?” So then the Product Developer will try to create a cost and planning estimate based on existing products in the group and then they’ll go, “So it’s going to cost this much

Take this amount of time to develop this product.” Then they start discussing with project teams in order to know if the Marketing mock-up is feasible or not and that’s when the Dév Décor and Packaging come in. They’d go “Oh this design is too complicated to industrialized, it’s not the right form,”

Then the Dév Décor might go “In order to achieve this level of shine you have to use this decoration technique.” So the operations team will work together and try to see what exists in the industry, what is feasible and find all the aspects that can potentially answer the Marketing brief.

So the moment we say “OK this project is feasible,” the teams start committing The Sourcing team will start requesting quotations from suppliers if needed to find the suppliers that can best reply to the Marketing brief. At the same time, you have

The Supply & Operational Planners who start their quantity estimates, they keep up with market trends to know if the product has a lot of demand they will estimate x quantities for the launch and then for the year. So actually there are all the different operational stakeholders who will work

Together, from the beginning till the end of the product development process meaning until the arrival of the product in the distribution platform and is ready to be sold. Throughout the entire project, it’s the Development team in the centre of it all

It’s them who coordinate everyone to ensure that the cost and timing constraints are respected. Generally in a Product Development process, the more you advance, the more you know the better you understand the mission. Honestly, during my internships, I got to work with exceptional Product Developers, it was really impressive how they managed to

Retain almost all the information on their project. If you ask them “What is the delivery date of this component?” They will know, it’s magical. Personally what I like the most is that the days are constantly changing, so you will never get bored, you could have instances that are more intense than others.

I think it’s a good balance between challenging and interesting If you are someone who enjoys solving problems then you would enjoy this role. It’s also a role that is hugely focused on communication, and you will learn how to adapt your message depending on the interlocutor, and you have a lot of them!

For example, you wouldn’t communicate the same message to the supplier as you would to the Marketing team. The big challenge for me is trying to achieve in the best way possible what was set out in the Marketing brief, while respecting the timing, costs and environmental pact of the group.

Another challenge to in my opinion is the communication aspect because you work closely with individuals and they are well complex, so I think that communication plays a huge role on psychology and also trying to understand what are the stakes of everyone. Anyway it’s an aspect that fascinates me all the time,

It’s different and more subjective and there isn’t really a textbook method to communicate well, you have to really understand who is in front of you and how to adapt your message in the best way possible! voilà voilà we have reached the end of the video, I hope that I succeeded in explaining

This role, it’s rather complex and I’m still a beginner. But generally speaking, it is a very interesting role, with a lot of beautiful challenges and honestly, I love it And nothing is more satisfying than seeing your products on shelves, it has not

Happened to me yet, but it will soon, next year, so I can’t wait! That’s all for this video, I hope I gave you guys a better idea on what Industrial Development is all about, feel free to drop your questions below in the comments and I will do my best to reply!

And if you’re applying to L’Oréal, I wish you all the best
