I picked up a 1994 Gary Fisher Tassajara. In my research I came across the screen shot I’ve attached.
I’m trying to understand what gearing I have now and what I can/ should upgrade to.
The current Alivio shifters are gummed up, and I sprayed them with break parts cleaner. That apparently was a bad idea as it moved all the numbers in the shifter windows.
So 1) what are the current gearing I have.
2) can I or should I switch out shifters,
3) completely overhaul? (Budget friendly)
…side note. Stumbled across Microsoft acolyte… is that reasonable if I need or could change out entirely? How compatible/easy is it?

EDIT: its a 19″
Crankset has three rings: 24, 34, and 42 tooth
Cassette has seven cogs 11–28 teeth.
You can put just about whatever you want on there. Are the chainrings easily replaceable with chainring bolts, or are they riveted together?
If you want more than seven gears in the back, ensure the freehub is wide enough for what you want. You’ll need a new chain, shifter, and cassette to make that work.
