Hi everyone I’m new to cycling and I’ve just bought a bike, my derailleur seems to move and allows my chain to go slack whenever I either back pedal or coast could anyone tell me how to fix it please?

It is the freehub/freehub body that is actually the issue. The thing that. I can’t tell which one your bike has but more generally it is gunked up and it is not allowing your bike to freewheel perfectly smoothly. How it’s serviced will vary depending on what the bike has some are easy to service others are less so. But more generally it isn’t the derailleur it’s the cog set. When cross chained it’s likely worse as well but still caused by the ratchet system in the cogset.
If it doesn’t have a problem shifting when you are pedaling normally than it likely isn’t a problem. Shift to the middle of the cassette and pedal backwards. If there is no issue then there is no issue
