2023 Bike Trip – Stelvio

Our 2023 European Motorbike Tour! Get ready for great biking, epic roads, the occasional beer and many, many, many thumbs up to camera.

This year we take the usual DFDS ferry from Newcastle to The Netherlands and travel to Germany, Italy, Austria, Luxembourg, Belgium and The Czech Republic. Taking in towns such as Monschau, Schwabish Hall, Riva Del Garda, Cortina D’ampezzo, Bad Reichenhall, Pilsen, Speyer, Vianden and Antwerp. With some epic roads including Stelvio, Grossglockner, Strada della Forra, Gardena Pass and Passo Sella (all on our BMW R1250 GS motorcycle) to name just a few.

Camera equipment? – Two GoPro 8’s and a Sony A74 with Sony Shotgun ECM-B1M microphone.

How can I use all that original copyrighted music? – You can use most music but you can’t make any money from your videos, ad revenue goes to the copyright holder, we don’t make a penny from the channel.

Would be great to know which roads you are on and names of places? – Tried it, but ended up with too much text popping up on screen, which became very distracting, so a gpx file with all the info is available.

How many miles per day would you recommend? – With a pillion and allowing time to enjoy the scenery and stops I’d say 200 max.

On the road again it’s our 2023 bike trip we are H ready to go there’s no rain nine countries in 19 days uh this is the Mr and Mrs Bike Tour cuz we’re married enjoy He A Wo He And here we are on the ferry after a bit of a drizzly wet day 150 something miles there and uh it was okay okay it was just a bit uh cold a we B Dam I think 14° and it was almost literally over the border into England and it went to 19°

It was uncanny dried us off quite nicely and little weight get on the fair but nothing too bad in our Pokey be room here and we’re just going to get ready to go out and maybe have a beer and we Explore Da Good morning from a slightly sleepy Helen we are on the ferry we’ve just had a very smooth Crossing um overnight we had a nice chilled out night last night fer bought some cards we played cards for a few hours I don’t know if that’s a sign of being married now it’s like

Nothing more to say to each other like play cards got a bit competitive mostly on my part terrible night sleep we’re on the sixth deck we’ve we’ve done this once before in the fairy We’ve Ended up in the sixth deck and I don’t know if you can

Hear there’s a constant kind of rumbling very rhythmic rumbling of the engine um and it’s quite loud so neither of us slept particularly well at all I think it was hallucinating at one point because I was just in and out of sleep so much so we’re both a little bit

Cuz he emailed twice and H they didn’t reply so I practiced my best German I phoned up had a big conversation in German may or may not have understood them so here goes this is the moment will we be locked in or out of our hotel what was the C well that didn’t

Work uh seven seven it’s not going well and just stop touching it just let it be so the code thing didn’t go too well the number was right um we plugged it in and didn’t work we tried again didn’t work we tried again and the beeping wouldn’t stop and

Down the Mosel River see what I did there which was just stunning gorgeously tacked wide roads we were cruising there were castles there were gorgeous little German towns and villages we went to kookum where we’ve been before for a night and we just went there for C

Cooking frezer had some zachar Tor and I had a Kush cooking very very good and then we just got back in the road and cruised along it was just a great day so beautiful so many Vineyards Vineyards just like scaling all the Valley area uh it was quite a sight and we’ve arrived

Here in a little place called bad where we’ve had the most amazing food both had venison with I had spitzel which is a kind of egg noodle with venison ruer head venison schnitzel so it’s been a great night and um yeah I’m just about to take freezer’s bike out for a Spin good and Morgan from Germany we’re here in a place called vad in the uh Hotel Zoom something schb thanks director it was very cool overnight but our room was stifling hot on the top floor so all the heat must have risen during the day it

Was baking hot so we had a terrible sleep really really bad coffee and fresh air today and it is fresh air today bit cloudy and overcast got the Lings back in it’s actually it says it’s 16° so it’s getting warmer so about half an hour we’ll stop take lines out

Interesting little town it’s over a river and it’s quite spread out it’s like small but spread out for that saying so it feels quite quiet that said we tried to book for dinner and pretty much every single place was all reserved all reserved all reserved we kept

Getting TFT out places and this was like 6:00 at night we then discovered um in a kind of main Square going up to a church there is this huge area where they have nighttime concerts so playing tonight with sister at so I think people are possibly booking early for dinner and then going

To see the show so this best kept secret that we didn’t know about on arrival um but we managed to find a little cafee for a panini and a we bit of foods and drink and we got a little sneak preview of the rehearsal of Sister Act so that was quite fun and then it started to rain so we kind of dashed home so we’re in our very quiet cold hotel room the con is so hopefully we get a really good night’s sleep Tonight hi good morning from Germany once again here we are in schwabish it’s Sunday morning can hear the church bells dingl linging over there it was an early night last night not going to lie we were pretty tired after two horrible sleeps kind of crashed last night and there

Germany interestingly a lot of roads were shut which is quite funny we must have had I don’t know 6 7 eight um a little bits of Road here and there that were closed um so we started very dutifully detouring and then we just kind of looked at the road and

Went our BMW can handle this so we kind of went a little bit Offroad on the road that we’re not meant to go on and it worked we kind of navigated through and then we’ve arrived here after A really lovely days biking in a place called

Schaer brow which is a brewery here in Germany and yeah we’re staying in this amazing room in the brewery we have drinks and dinner really great German food so a little momento schaffler brow beer mat Frost and uh you know it’s not a hell Razer trip without beer and chocolate we just find

This in the fridge so it’s going to cost me3 but you know it’s Chocolate after a Fab days biking we had a Fab night or hotel here in m vams great Brewery it’s really good Brewery top restaurant top bar friendly enough stuff and great food beers were consumed but we’re in the bathroom here um nice light but this place takes all our boxes

It’s getting so confusing we left this morning left Germany this morning had to think about that we traveled through Austria and now we’re in Italy it was 11° when we left so we put the Linings back in a little bit fresh um had some brilliant roads today just beautiful

Scenery everything became quite Alpine and there were the mountains and then all the shallies and everything started to change and look different we went from 11° to 29° pretty sharply so we had to pull over and take everything off again we hit Italy we went to a little

Place just over the Italian border there used to be a village there and they needed to turn the area into a reservoir into a dam for water all the villagers to move out I think 1949 500 people had to be resettled it was quite really but

What it means is the whole village is underwater and there was just this church steeple poking out the top of the dam it was quite a sight to see actually and then we hit stal stal path so we did that at the end of the day purposefully

To try and get a bit quieter and I’m so glad we did cuz it was very quiet there are 48 here pin bands we have tackled TW 26 of them uh and then we pulled off to our hotel for the night which is basically halfway up the sto pass fer

Find this place it’s called France and H France and H we got in just on time because it was the most Almighty thunder and lightning storm I popped in for a shower I came back out for the shower and the whole place had gone dark and it

Was like forky lightning um outside the window and it was very dramatic and best of all we saw groundhogs what better way to end the night than on a groundhog late Night and good morning from the St here we are in the uh Mecca of the biking and driving World crazy road we’ve done half of it last night when we came in about 5:00 so it was relatively quite quiet and it’s now qu to 9 we’re just about to

Leave and do the rest of the journey got about four miles was it to the top uh sto take a few pictures the sun’s out it’s a lovely morning looking forward to getting that ticked off the box and uh quite high up here think we’re a bit breathless but all good um

There’s a nice hotel by the way stamp of approval from Hell Razer great stuff I have my favorite beer on draft coincidental honestly really nice night five course meal love the little portions all very nice very Quicky stay simple but clean room great views nice hotel recommended let’s Go [Laughter] He La H Well done here we are in St View at the stew pass on top of the world there’s a lot of motorbike action happening it’s amazing just absolutely amazing 4 to8 herin BS freezer took them like a pro I can’t quite describe it this weaving path that you can see down below you and

Parked the bike and I just walked back and took the stairs back up just to end on a deathly high so we did that came back down the stair all bro and I just all of a sudden noticed the uh start had popped on 40 extra miles from somewhere

Can’t think why before we realized it we were stuck in the Italian Network tunnel system miles miles miles of bloody tunnel H so that was Grim so kind of lost us never really as supposed to we got back on track and then the sa just took us quickest Rook here and it happen

To be very Curby roads small villages but great fun very warm and of course we’re in Italy one of the things I will say that Italy is beautiful place it’s a marvelous country but the drivers are a bit I’m had the experience of that today with a mad 20-year-old lady who was just

Torrential rain so we’re now soaking absolutely soaking and cold and chivery it was a little bit H extreme but however most of our gear has survived I was testing out new trousers um and new boots and both kind of passed the test which is good looks like it’s

Brightening up so we might get out yet I think we’re going to have cold cold showers no we’re not we’re going to have hot showers now to warm up so we are done drink through CA last night trying to find some for dinner and fa’s like I’m not having a drink tonight

Enjoyed it and then we came down now and through Austria and then into Germany to bad renal where we are staying for the night we’re in our Ibis Hotel little bit of a false start on arrival it’s very confusing so the entrance to the car park is in a different building across

The road so we drove past it thinking it’s a different hotel and then we asked somebody and said oh no you need to go back in there we went okay so we came to an entrance we went down on a big slope and the barrier did not go up but there

Was no button to press frezer was absolutely stuck cuz you know doesn’t have reverse gear couldn’t pull up and we realized that we’d actually gone in a private entrance and we were very fortunate we met two angels in Disguise who lived there and had a key and could

Help us out cuz it was getting a little bit stressful it was very hot and I was thinking that I was going to have to round up like four German guys to come and like pull the bike back so all in all a bit of a hiccupy arrival but we’re

In our Ibis Hotel praying the air con properly kicks in cuz it’s very warm it’s 30° we’re lotioned up and off to hit the town maybe a beer garden night night oh no not yet so we like bad raen Halal it’s a nice little town it’s quiet it’s clean

Temperatures last night started off pretty hot but cooled down really nice pleasant evening to wander about and there wasn’t a whole heap of stuff to do but we found a brilliant beer guard garden and restaurant really good German food great beer they brew themselves so it was really nice really enjoyed it

We’d recommend it we’d come back and it might be a nice place to base yourself for a few days as well so yesterday we were in Italy rode up through Austria to Germany and now we’re off to Czech Republic getting confusing quite confused what languages we’re speaking

When and where but uh it’s all part of the fun of Biking Years ago when I was younger I kind of liked a girl I knew she was mine and we were sweethearts that was then but then it’s true I’m in love with a fairy tale even though oh it hurts cuz I don’t care if I lose my mind I’m already C every day we started fighting every night we fell in love no one else could make me sadder but no one else could LIF me high above I don’t know what I was doing when suddenly we fell apart nowadays I can’t fight her but when I do we’ll get a brand new

To stop the little bit daing of the water around the Neer Chief stopped for an ice cream and we’ve arrived in pilson for two days we’ve got two nights got a day off tomorrow so um we checked in managed to work the hotel garage this time still a bit complicated but we got

There and we’re in our lovely room and freezer walked in and of course air con works so he’s a very happy man it’s actually freezing in here it’s almost Subzero kind of looking forou going out in the heat just to warm up before we come in and cool D all over again here’s

To pilson she’s a tail yeah even though it hurts cuz I don’t care if I lose my mind I’m already ready C Speee For Welcome to the middle of the day here in PS we have been out this morning Helen went to mass she was delighted to find a mass in progress in toon uh after that we went to a synagogue where I was given a little Jewish cap to wear I put that

On I drew the line at circumcision though I’ve come back to the tail just to cool down a little bit very hot today uh but the real reason we come to pilson and to be honest I think the real reason anyone comes to pson is for The pser

Artful Brewery very important Brewery in the history of beer brewery let’s going to have a Beer fun facts about the brewery in 18 19 39 250 local families had been given Brewing rights club together to basically create a super Brewery which became pser arle and within 3 years they had launched the first pser arle beer they brought in a Bavarian brew master

And of course it just grew and became this incredible beer that we have today with so many of the traditional Brewing methods still used we went to see the packaging hall there’s one line in it and takes 60,000 bot every eror it is the size of five football

Pitches we went from obiously very warm temperatures outside to nice air conditioned Brewing area but then we went to one area which we think was where the matching was happening it was roasting absolutely sweltering freezer was sweating buckets we then quickly came out there and then we descended

Into the cellers which was between 5 and 7° We met a a ban guy who was just pouring beer pouring beer right out the Big Barrel so can of unfiltered so it was quite a novelty really good fun and we recommend it something to do in PS Well we’ve had a nice time in pilson I would say it’s definitely a place just to come if you’re interested in the brewery turns very quiet it’s not very touristy there’s a couple of nice things to do but it’s really all about the brewery and it’s a good tour actually

It’s interesting think it’s informative and you go to all these different places the time passes quite quick and it’s very meable I recommend it the other reason to come to pilson is the pizza place they have uh it’s excellent pizzas really good pizzas proper Gourmet pizzas

So we’re all packed up now heading down to the bike uh it’s in the garage underground we’re going to get out get on the road be bit warm today so short day 150 odd miles um to stop plenty of places to cool down some water oh oh oh am I
