Six months ago, I started bike commuting. It truly changed me! I moved to the city, got a new job as a home help (not sure of the English for it. I’m basically a nursing assistant that works at people’s homes). I drove about 30km a day and hated pretty much every second of it. Seeing people happily biking, I gave it a try and it was exhausting, especially with my home being right on top of a hill! So I bought an electric-assist bike and suddenly everything was so nice? I could adjust the assist to my tiredness, see my improvements, my thighs got toned and I lost about 8kgs! My breathing/cardio is waaaay better, my body is fit and getting muscular, it feels so good. I joined a bike-repair association, met wonderful people, learned so much! I sold my car and now even with my shitty salary, I manage to save some money each month. Now my vacations projects all include traveling and bikepacking. Even in the bad days where I want to quit my job, my bike commute lifts me up and changes mind.

This dumb steel machine changed my life for the better and I’m so grateful for the community resources and support everywhere, on the internet and IRL, making starting biking easier and less frightening. Its a blast and I’m just so happy!! 😀

  1. Hello yes it’s called home help in English also.
You should be proud of yourself, a colleague at work in her 60s started cycling to work a few years back and is looking so much fitter and healthier.

  2. I don’t drive my self so have always cycled, I get to see much more wildlife on my bike than I would ever in a vehicle.
You get to appreciate the changing seasons and a slower pace of life.
When away on holiday we always take our bikes to explore
