The first pic is the original. It has a directional pulley on the left side the replacement doesn’t. What does it do and do I need it? I’m completely new to this, so sorry if it’s a stupid question.

They seem to have the same specs as far as capacity, SiS, speed compatibility, etc so the only difference would be that the shifter cable housing on your current derail with the pulley would probably be too short to route correctly to the replacement derail that you showed a picture of. Is that a 6 or 7 speed rear cassette? If its 7 go for a Shimano Altus rear derailleur, much better construction, works heaps better, last twice as long & costs $10 more.
Do ride alot uphill? 8 speed shimano casettes are cheap the hg31 is made from steel. The cog range is from 11-34. Makes a climb easier. Also aliexpress sells 8 speed cassetts up to 42 cogs o.O experimental
They are completely compatible, you’ll only need a longer cable and housing.
I’m riding with a Ty300 rd you are going to go for, it’s a solid choice, mine isn’t willing to give up after 10k km of abuse.
As long as you stick to the same brand and the same speeds, you may just need to adjust the cable length. Up to 10 speeds the cassettes have all different spacing between cogs, therefore the cable length pulled when shifting is different.
