My family member has this bike that they haven’t touched in 3 years and have no idea how much they would charge me. This would be the first bike I would own (I’ve been looking for a bit but it’s hard to find used bikes my size in my area).
Do I need to worry about the rust near the wheels or anything else. I would plan to buy a new seat and after some time a new handlebar set.
I was wondering if (1) the bike isn’t worth it regardless, (2) how much would be a fair price, and (3) how much would I need to put in to fix it up, if any? Thanks so much

Early 1990s Suntour indexing shifters kind of sucked, but early 1990s Wisconsin built, lugged Trek Multitracks are great frames. Its not worth much, but its also a great bike if it fits you.
Do not worry about the rust, it’s surface rust. Just wipe it down.
Great bikes! Easy to work on! I’d plan on spending $200 at a bike shop to get it running perfectly, totally worth it IMO
Refurbished from a shop that might be worth $200 with new cable, housing, tires and an overhaul. As is hopefully not much since it’s family but maybe $40-60.
If it fits you then this is a great find! Shouldn’t take much to fix up to riding condition. Lots of options if you wanted to give it a component ‘update’ like the folks on r/xbiking
I would personally swap the drive train out to a wide range 8 or 9 speed (1x or 2x). Canti brakes can easily be set up with drop bars as well if you wanted to go that route or stick with flat or swept back bars. Plenty of tire clearance, fender options, rack mounts. It might not be new but it’s got potential to be a ‘does everything’ except stuff you’d want a full suspension bike for.
